Gastroenterology and Hepatology

The Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Indiana University School of Medicine is nationally recognized for excellence in research, education and patient care. Under the leadership of Mohammad Al-Haddad, MD, our team is dedicated to advancing digestive health through innovative clinical services and groundbreaking research discoveries.

Established in 1958 by Philip Christiansen, MD, the division has grown into a nationally prominent program thanks to the visionary leadership of Lawrence Lumeng, MD, (division director, 1984–2007), Naga Chalasani, MD, (division director, 2007–2020), and Glen Lehman, MD, (clinical director, 1985–2005). Over the decades, we have expanded our faculty and fellowship programs, increased patient and procedural volumes and strengthened our federally funded research initiatives, continuing a legacy of excellence that shapes the future of gastroenterology and hepatology.
