Gastroenterology and hepatology faculty physicians at Indiana University School of Medicine are the exclusive providers of GI and hepatology care at IU Health University Hospital, Eskenazi Health and the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center in Indianapolis. Our team includes 72 faculty members and 18 advanced practice providers. Collectively, our faculty perform over 45,000 endoscopic procedures annually across multiple practice sites, establishing us as a powerhouse of endoscopy in the Midwest and nationwide.

Outpatient and Ambulatory Facilities

Our main outpatient surgical center is named after Glen Lehman, MD, in recognition of his numerous contributions to endoscopy. In addition to our Academic Health Center-based clinics and endoscopy suites, we provide care at:

  • IU Health North Hospital
  • IU Health Saxony Hospital

Our North side endoscopy suite is named after Douglas Rex, MD, a globally recognized expert and pioneer in colorectal cancer screening.

These facilities include a state-of-the-art suite that was formally named in 2020 through a $1 million endowment as the "Lehman, Bucksot and Sherman ERCP Suite," honoring Glen Lehman, MD, longtime ERCP charge nurse Lois Bucksot, RN, and Stuart Sherman, MD.

Community Outreach

Continuing a tradition that began nearly 30 years ago, our division maintains a robust outreach clinical program. Faculty clinicians have established practices in towns surrounding Indianapolis, extending our high-quality care to communities throughout central Indiana.

Advanced Technology

IU School of Medicine faculty provide care at the only center in Indiana to offer a wide variety of cutting-edge pioneer technologies such as the use of mini scopes to investigate diseases of the pancreas and biliary tree, lithotripsy of pancreatic stones, Natural Orifice Transgastric Endoluminal surgery (NOTES), POEMG-POEM, ESD and innovative anti-reflux procedures.

Clinical Services

Our colorectal cancer screening program, led by internationally recognized endoscopist Douglas Rex, MD, is one of the most experienced and innovative in the country. The program is known for pioneering techniques, advancing quality standards and contributing significantly to national guidelines in colorectal cancer prevention and detection.

We are the only center in Indiana, and one of the leading programs in the nation, offering double balloon enteroscopy. Our expert faculty perform this advanced procedure to diagnose and treat conditions of the small intestine that are otherwise difficult to access, using state-of-the-art technology and techniques that place us at the forefront of enteroscopic care.

The GI motility program, led by John Wo, MD is one of the largest and most comprehensive programs in the Midwest. The GI motility laboratory performs a variety of procedures that aid in the diagnosis and treatment of GI motility disorders. Our clinics are led by physicians who specialize in the field and are engaged in the comprehensive care of patients with gastroparesis, eosinophilic esophagitis, irritable bowel syndrome and more.

Our division is proud to be the only GI group in Indiana with four full-time GI psychologists on faculty. This integrated behavioral health team plays a vital role in supporting patients with complex gastrointestinal conditions, offering evidence-based interventions for disorders of gut-brain interaction, chronic GI symptoms and the psychological impact of chronic illness.

Faculty physicians in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology who specialize in hepatology are renowned nationally as leading authorities in the field and are engaged in the comprehensive care of patients with liver disease. Our hepatology team ranks among the nation's largest general hepatology groups, boasting a roster of 18 physicians and advanced practice providers (APPs) together providing specialized hepatology care.

The IBD group, led by Monika Fischer, MD, is the only team in Indiana with dedicated expertise in inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis) and celiac disease.

Our liver and small bowel transplant program is among the largest in the United States. With a multidisciplinary team and a commitment to innovation and excellence, the program consistently achieves outstanding patient outcomes and national recognition for quality of care.

Advanced luminal endoscopic procedures for treatment of precancerous and early-stage cancers of the gastrointestinal tract, including endoscopic mucosal resection, photodynamic therapy, radiofrequency ablation, argon plasma coagulation, luminal stenting, polypectomy of small and large polyps.
