The Department of Medicine offers a variety of ACGME-accredited fellowship programs. Training opportunities encompass all areas of internal medicine. With programs offered by each of the department’s 10 divisions, postgraduate internists looking to further their specialized training are provided with an array of opportunities working with exceptional faculty physicians at IU School of Medicine.

Fellowship Programs

The Division of Cardiovascular Medicine offers five ACGME-accredited fellowship programs. The programs include: Cardiovascular Disease, Advanced Heart Failure & Transplant Cardiology, Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology, Interventional Cardiology and Adult Congenital Heart Disease.

The Division of Clinical Pharmacology fellowship is a rigorous didactic and research training program designed to generate future clinical pharmacology leaders for academia, drug regulatory agencies and the pharmaceutical industry. Funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIGMS) and certified by the American Board of Clinical Pharmacology, it is one of few clinical pharmacology fellowship programs that includes training in modeling and simulation.

A two-year ACGME-accredited Endocrinology and Metabolism Fellowship is offered to postgraduates seeking rigorous training in clinical endocrinology and metabolic disease, and research. Fellows are exposed to all aspects of endocrinology through a comprehensive, thought-provoking curriculum.

A three-year ACGME-accredited fellowship in gastroenterology and hepatology is offered through the Department of Medicine. A comprehensive clinical curriculum provides fellows rigorous training in the various aspects of gastrointestinal, pancreaticobiliary disease and liver disease.

The Geriatrics Fellowship offers fellows the chance to learn in unique hospital settings with the opportunity to see patients across the continuum of care. The Palliative Medicine Fellowship trains individuals to develop expertise in the care of patients with serious illness and become leaders in the field of palliative care.

The Division of Hematology/Oncology offers a combined three-year fellowship that is customized to meet the career goals of its trainees. Fellows experience excellent clinical training and mentoring from faculty physicians and are eligible for board certification in both disciplines of hematology and medical oncology.

The Infectious Diseases Fellowship is a two-year ACGME-accredited program that provides subspecialty training in clinical infectious diseases. A third and fourth year is available to fellows interested in pursuing a career in research.

As one of the leading nephrology training programs in the country, IU School of Medicine provides a stimulating environment for fellows to excel through an ACGME-accredited general Nephrology Fellowship Program or a one-year Transplant Nephrology Fellowship Program accredited by the American Society of Transplantation (AST).

The Pulmonary Division of the Department of Medicine offers two ACGME-accredited fellowship programs, one in pulmonary and critical care medicine and a fellowship in sleep medicine.

The Rheumatology Fellowship Program provides intensive clinical and research training for physicians who are board-certified or board-eligible in internal medicine. Fellows acquire the necessary skills to deliver expert medical care to patients with rheumatic diseases and, if desired, may receive training in independent research.
