For more than 90 years, the Department of Pediatrics at Indiana University School of Medicine has provided comprehensive medical training for medical students, residents and fellows in addition to lifelong learning opportunities for practicing physicians. The department consists of 18 specialty divisions based at Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health, which is ranked as one of America’s Best Children’s Hospitals in 10 out of 10 specialties in US News and World Report.

Additionally, the Department of Pediatrics is home to several research centers and boasts an outstanding reputation in clinical, basic science and translational research. IU School of Medicine Department of Pediatrics is consistently among the top five to ten percent of National Institutes of Health pediatric funding recipients nationally. Pediatric faculty are committed to developing new treatments and therapies for childhood diseases and to providing exceptional patient and family centered care for children in Indiana and the Midwest.

Research

Clinical Care

Based at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis, faculty pediatricians provide primary, secondary and tertiary clinical care for children at multiple hospital networks, community and specialty clinics throughout Indiana and the Midwest.

A. Ioana Cristea, MD

Professor of Clinical Pediatrics

Dr. Cristea is a pediatric pulmonologist who cares for children with Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia as well as children with chronic respiratory failure who require mechanical ventilation at home via tracheostomy.

Jyoti K. Patel, MD

Associate Professor of Clinical Pediatrics

Dr. Patel is a pediatric cardiologist who cares for children with all forms of congenital and acquired heart disease. She specializes in advanced cardiac imaging (transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography, and cardiac MRI).

Associate Professor of Pediatrics

Dr. McHenry is a pediatrician and the director of pediatric global health education who is passionate about research. Her work is primarily focused on early childhood development within sub-Saharan Africa.

Courtney M. Rowan, MD

Associate Professor of Pediatrics

Dr. Rowan is a pediatric intensivist with an interest immunocompromised children with respiratory failure. Her NIH K23-funded research focuses on early prognostic biomarkers to identify children post bone marrow transplant at highest risk to develop respiratory failure.

Unique Training Opportunities

The Department of Pediatrics provides numerous educational opportunities for residents and fellows with subspecialized, community and research-focused pathways. These include programs such as the Morris Green Physician Scientist Development Program (for pediatricians interested in academic medicine and research) and the Community Pediatrics Training Initiative, which focuses on the role of physicians as community leaders who advance medicine through building community partnerships.

Graduate Medical Education Programs

The Department of Pediatrics at IU School of Medicine offers a General Pediatrics residency program and four combined residency programs: Internal Medicine/ Pediatrics, Emergency Medicine/ Pediatrics, Pediatrics/ Psychiatry/ Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and Neurodevelopmental Disabilities.
