Gut bacteria associated with life-threatening complications in African children with severe malaria

Indiana University School of Medicine scientists have discovered a gut bacteria that, if treated, could lower risk of deadly complications in children with malaria.

Associate Professor of Pediatrics

Emily Sims is a pediatric endocrinologist and diabetes expert within the school of medicine. Her research focuses on identifying and understanding risk factors for diabetes development, with an ultimate goal of predicting or slowing the progression of diabetes. She runs the TADPOL study, a clinical trial aimed at testing a drug's ability to assist children and young adults with Type-1 diabetes. 

November is Diabetes Awareness Month. According to the American Diabetes Association, 666,400 Hoosier adults, or 11.2% of the adult population in Indiana, have been diagnosed with the disease.
