Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital
Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital is a large 400-bed safety-net hospital for Indianapolis. General medicine wards at Eskenazi Hospital offer a great mix of bread and butter medicine along with some of the most interesting cases on campus. The Eskenazi Hospital ICU offers residents autonomy and high volumes that make our residents well-prepared for careers in critical care. Many residents have their continuity clinics through Eskenazi Health, including opportunities for predominantly Spanish-speaking patient populations.
The Richard L. Roudebush Indianapolis VA Medical Center is a 200-bed tertiary referral hospital that receives statewide referrals and admissions from all VA facilities in Indiana. The most complex and interesting cases in the state are transferred to the VA Medical Center, and many are also admitted from the emergency department. Our residents comprise the general ward and MICU teams and participate in nearly every medical subspecialty consult service. Continuity clinics at the VA Medical Center are very popular due to excellent support staff and programs including substance use treatment, integrative pain management and housing. The VA Medical Center also sponsors our unique safety and quality improvement training experience and is the home of a robust health services research unit.
IU Health University Hospital
First opened in 1970 (with several major renovations since), this 440-bed hospital serves as a tertiary referral center for highly subspecialized care in oncology, hematology, bone marrow transplant and solid organ transplant (liver, kidney, multi-visceral) and is recognized for excellence in gastroenterology, pulmonology and many surgical subspecialties. The IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center is Indiana’s only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center. Residents gain experience on subspecialty ward rotations in hematology, hepatology and critical care as well as core consult rotations in pulmonology, gastroenterology, infectious diseases and oncology. Residents are exposed to solid transplant medicine and bone marrow transplant medicine.
IU Health Methodist Hospital
This 1,000-bed hospital is a large tertiary referral center with over 130 ICU beds. It serves as Indianapolis’s largest trauma center as well as a highly subspecialized center for cardiovascular surgery, thoracic surgery, neurosurgery, lung transplantation and neurocritical care. Methodist Hospital is also known for advanced heart failure treatments including LVAD and heart transplantation. It is one of few hospitals in the state with the capacity for ECMO therapy. University and Methodist Hospitals function together with a close relationship through IU Health.
