Combined Internal Medicine-Geriatrics Residency

IU School of Medicine is one of a distinguished and limited number of programs in the country providing an official pathway for training geriatricians. While this pathway still requires 48-months of training to be eligible for certification in geriatrics, it offers several advantages.

Benefits of pursuing a Medicine-Geriatrics Residency

  • Early exposure to geriatric leadership who will mentor you throughout training.

  • Clinical experiences in geriatrics during internal medicine training which satisfy clinical requirement for Geriatric Medicine Fellowship.

  • Opportunity for scholarly activity, including research, during fellowship since several months of clinical requirements are completed during residency.

Application Details

  • There is one medicine-geriatrics position each year.

  • This program has a separate NRMP code from the internal medicine categorical program.

  • Both internal medicine and geriatric medicine faculty are involved in the interview and selection process.

  • Applicants may rank both the medicine-geriatrics program and the categorical residency training program.
