Are you a rising second-year medical student eager to build your point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) skills? The POCUS Summer Program offers a unique opportunity to jump start your training. Applications will open next spring for the next cohort.
Held in Indianapolis from late May to mid-June, this weekday-only, two-week intensive program is designed to accelerate your ultrasound proficiency and clinical confidence.
Why POCUS?
POCUS is a vital diagnostic tool used across many specialties — including emergency medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, anesthesia, OB-GYN, surgery and more. All medical students will develop POCUS competency during their training, and this program provides a strong early foundation.
Program Highlights:
- Limited to approximately 60 rising second-year medical students
- Learn to perform, interpret and teach POCUS, including aorta, FAST, cardiac, musculoskeletal exams and much more
- Expert-led sessions and real-time scanning practice
- Real experience to boost your CV
- Collaborative learning environment with peers and mentors
Faculty and senior sonography students will guide you on proper POCUS use in a variety of clinical specialties while you get hands-on practice with standardized patients or simulators.
After completion of the program, you’ll be expected to serve as a peer-training resource on your campus. You’ll also meet qualifications for membership in the POCUS Probe Society.
Limited housing stipends are available for regional campus students. Students participating in the Indiana University Medical Student Program for Research and Scholarship Summer Program (IMPRS) are welcome to apply. The POCUS team will try to coordinate schedules so students can participate in both programs.
