First Year Orientation

Class of 2030 orientation: July 27–31, 2026

Orientation is designed to provide vital information about campus resources and items to complete before joining IU School of Medicine. It will also allow learners to speak with current students, faculty and staff in order to have questions addressed.

Highlights

  • New Student Convocation — Meet IU School of Medicine leaders and classmates from across the state, and recite the Physician’s Oath for the first time.

  • Resource Fair & Mixer — Explore the many available activities, opportunities and resources at IU School of Medicine.

  • Specialty Speed Rounds — Engage with current faculty and residents and learn more about the various specialties students can pursue.

  • Community Immersion Project — Participate in a service experience that deepens understanding of local and national social issues and fosters fellowship and community building among the class.

  • Common Read Experience — Read a selected book before Orientation to advance your medical knowledge and engage in critical thinking activities with colleagues. Past selections have included “Everything is Tuberculosis” by John Green and “What the Eyes Don’t See: A Story of Crisis, Resistance and Hope in an American City” by Mona Hanna, MD.

  • Professional Learning Communities (PLC) — Meet fellow PLC members and faculty mentors. These groups offer support, mentorship and a sense of belonging throughout medical school.

  • Connect with classmates, student leaders, mentors, lead advisors and deans.

Other important components:

  • Canvas: IU’s learning platform is used for traditional face-to-face courses, online and hybrid courses, and other educational experiences. Orientation modules in the Canvas Advising Roadmap include critical information and summer tasks to complete (with a helpful checklist included).

  • MD Student News: A weekly newsletter that keeps students informed through their medical school journey.
