Four diverse locations provide a broad range of clinical experience for the Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship at IU School of Medicine.

Clinical Locations

Four diverse locations provide a broad range of clinical experience, which are likely unmatched by most programs. All locations are accessible by a short walk or the IU Health Shuttle.

IU Health University Hospital

University Hospital is a quaternary referral center and home to subspecialty care. Typically, three pulmonary and critical care fellows can be found at University Hospital staffing the medical ICU, performing consults on an array of subspecialty cases and working on the bronchoscopy and PFT rotation.

There is a dedicated room, OR 5, where all our bronchoscopies are performed. Typically, the ICU fellow and consult fellow alternate weekends on. Upper level fellows are able to moonlight within the ICU and will work 20 night shifts throughout the academic year. The subspecialty services unique to University Hospital include hepatology, ERCP, pulmonary wards, hematology/oncology, the transplant ICU, and the bone marrow transplant unit.

IU Health Methodist Hospital

IU Health Methodist Hospital

Methodist Hospital is a large tertiary referral center and community practice hospital. It is the largest hospital in the IU Health system with over 100 ICU beds. It houses the cardiovascular surgical services including ECMO and lung transplantation. Typically, three fellows work at Methodist Hospital covering the ECMO service, pulmonary consults, and senior service — a rotation reserved for upper-level fellows to independently manage an ICU service without clinic or teaching responsibilities.

Just like University Hospital, there is a dedicated bronchoscopy room. The consult fellow will alternate weekends with the senior service fellow covering the 4 East medical ICU. Consults are typically received via Diagnotes.

IUH West Hospital

IU Health West Hospital

In December 2024, IU Health West will celebrate its hospitals 20th Anniversary. IU Health West Hospital was designed with "on-stage" and "off-stage" corridors and elevators to keep public and visitor movement through the hospital separate from the movement of patients, materials, staff and supplies. Hence, the "day-to-day" operations that go into running a hospital are kept out of the publicly-traveled areas, allowing for a more peaceful, serene and home-like environment. Many elements come together to create what is known as IU Health West Hospital's Sanctuary of Healing—building design and decor, technology and relationship-centered care, to name just a few. The physical environment and our staff work in harmony to create a soothing, stress-free, remarkable healthcare experience for patients and their loved ones. IU Health West Hospital is proud to have earned advanced certification as a Primary Stroke Center from The Joint Commission.
