Maintenance of Certification in Pediatrics

Board certified pediatricians can receive American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) Part IV Maintenance of Certification (MOC4) credit by performing meaningful quality improvement projects within their clinical workspace. This applies to both Indiana University School of Medicine faculty and other practicing physicians in the State of Indiana.

Pediatricians who currently participate in the quality improvement project can apply to receive MOC4 credit. Small group projects (up to 10 participants) can be approved retroactively. Large group projects must submit a Review Request Form during the planning stages of the project before a completed project may be submitted.

Sponsor’s Role

The IU School of Medicine Department of Pediatrics Quality Improvement Portfolio Committee serves a as a sponsor organization and participates in the review of project application. The committee reports meaningful physician participation directly to the ABP and credit is awarded once the portfolio sponsor enters information from the physician’s attestation. Projects are typically approved for 25 points of ABP MOC4 credit.

Participation Requirements

Physicians must contribute in a meaningful way to the quality improvement project by being intellectually engaged in the planning and execution of the project, as well as participating in the implementation of the projects intervention (the changes designed to improve care). Participants must review data in keeping with the project’s measurement plan to include a minimum baseline and two follow up cycles of data. Additionally, participants must collaborate actively by attending team meetings in person or virtually, and must participate in education related to quality improvement methods.

Applications

Applications may be submitted for the ABP MOC4 credit for the following:

  1. Completed small group projects of up to 10 participants not previously approved by the ABP,
  2. New proposed small group projects of up to 10 people not previously approved by the ABP, or
  3. Large group projects of 11 or more participants not previously approved by the ABP
