Internal Medicine-Pediatrics Current Residents

Chief Residents

Chief residents provide leadership and support to residents in the combined Internal Medicine-Pediatrics Residency program. They serve as mentors and advocates for the residents and set a positive tone for the program.

Mac Light, MD, MBA

Mac Light HeadshotHello! My name is Mac Light. I was born and raised in the greater Houston area in Texas. I studied biology with a business minor at a small liberal arts school in Georgetown, Texas called Southwestern University. In medical school at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, I took a year between MS3 and MS4 to pursue my MBA at Rice University. Combining both my interests in medicine and administration, I'm planning to pursue a career as a combined hospitalist with administrative roles in value-based care and physician leadership.

I had a hard time deciding what to do for residency because I liked a little bit of everything. I knew I had found my people in med-peds when I realized they had the same problem! I think the IU med-peds experience prepares one to be the quintessential med-peds physician. It gives us five diverse training sites, four EMRs, three times the group chats, two board exams, and one big happy med-peds family. There is also a lot to see in Indy, from the Mass Ave restaurants, the major/minor league sports teams, the live music venues, the running trails along the White River, and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (home to the greatest spectacle in racing). It is an honor to serve as one of the chief residents for 2025-2026.

Outside of the hospital, I enjoy playing soccer on the official med-peds soccer team "Goals of Care," playing chess at the downtown library's chess club "Books & Rooks," and running the Indy Mini Marathon every year. Welcome to IU med-peds!

Alaina Turchi, MD, MS

Alaina Turchi Headshot

Originally from the Midwest, I have been fortunate to complete many stages of my medical education and residency training within the Hoosier state. I studied neuroscience at Indiana University Bloomington, later venturing to Philadelphia to complete a Master’s of Science in Biomedical Science. My path then brought me back to Indiana University School of Medicine for medical school, and further to stay on at IU for residency, where I now serve as a med-peds chief resident.

I was drawn to med-peds for its ability to combine the comprehensive, systematic approach of internal medicine with the family-centered, advocacy driven style of pediatrics. I was able to experience the breadth of our med-peds family, working with the incredible med-peds residents, hospitalists and specialists as a student. IU offers the perfect training environment with its strong categorical programs, emphasis on patient advocacy and the supportive med-peds community that has shaped both my career and personal growth. My favorite highlights of residency have included service on the strategic engagement and recruitment committees, working at Camp Riley with medically complex children and pursuing global health research in Eldoret, Kenya through AMPATH.

My academic interests center around both pulmonary medicine and health equity. In true med-peds fashion, I plan to focus on transitions medicine for tracheostomy and ventilator dependent pediatric patients.

As a chief resident, I hope to continue fostering a culture of inclusivity, mentorship and resident support. Med-peds thrives because of the diversity of its trainees’ passions, and I am eager to help others explore their “why med-peds” while preparing for their next steps.

Hobbies: Playing soccer, hiking, reading, writing reflective prose

Residency Reflection: The dedication the residents and program leadership showed on my interview day to ensure I would have what I needed to thrive here! I vividly recall one of our chiefs providing information about the closest national parks and various soccer leagues. It was a pleasant surprise to realize she had read that section of my application and wanted to help me get connected to life in Indianapolis. Furthermore, both Dr. Brady and Dr. Wilson, knowing my passion for research, helped me get connected with the Morris Green Physician Scientist Development Program. These two small acts of kindness spoke volumes to the support I would have as a med-peds resident at IU and has only continued since I became a resident.

Residency Reflection: So many things about IU med-peds caught my eye! The people I interacted with on my interview day and now the people I interact with every day are definitely what I love most about our program, community, and family. The variety of clinical sites that we rotate through allow us to experience so many different perspectives of healthcare and allow for us to interact with an incredibly diverse community of people. With a large class and program, you'll never go a day without seeing a fellow med-peds resident. The support, kindness, and laughs that we share create the best of friendships.

Residency Reflection: As a medical student at IU, some of the best residents and staff that I worked with were med-peds and they inspired me to pursue a career in the field. There is a strong network of support both in and outside of the hospital here. Also, with a large program size everyone knows what med-peds is and there is always someone else around in your program. IU also has all the clinical opportunities of a larger city with its statewide catchment area, without the living costs or traffic. I feel that there are opportunities here for mentors and experiences for any path I might decide to pursue after residency. And of course, the people are great too! We learn a lot AND have a lot of fun as an IU med-peds family!

Residency Reflection: Coming from a school and state with no med-peds program, I wanted to go to a program with a large med-peds culture that had its own identity. As the largest med-peds program in the country, IU has a strong presence and provides so many opportunities for excellent training. I also wanted to explore combined endocrinology, and IU had an elective for combined endo which stood out to me. What really sold me though was the genuine care and interest I received from everybody I met from interview day until now. My colleagues, faculty, and staff all have a good time together which has been my favorite part of IU.

Hobbies: Cat mom of two kitties — Minerva and Albus, trying new restaurants and coffee shops, reading, watching all sports, playing pickleball/sand volleyball/softball, yoga/mindfulness, traveling

Residency Reflection: I was super excited about coming to IU med-peds because of the program size and knowing that I would have 13 new friends coming into residency and plenty of support around me! I was also really happy to match into a program that had strong and stable categorical programs. After being here for only a couple of months, I can honestly say that IU med-peds is a big family and there are always wonderful people here to support you, help you, and encourage you to keep working hard and be the best version of yourself! Indianapolis is also a super fun city to live in — I live in the suburbs and can get downtown in under 15 minutes, but live equally close to state parks, nature preserves, and green space to provide a great balance!

Hobbies: Running, cooking, eating, rock climbing, audiobooks, my dogs, my cat, my TV

Residency Reflection: Everyone likes to emphasize the size of our program and I have to agree — it's the perfect size. We're still small enough that I can connect with everyone in my class, but big enough that I get to work with other med-peds people everywhere I am — so far a majority of my attendings, seniors and co-interns on service have been med-peds! This is a place that "does med-peds" very well. Indianapolis is also great! Coming from the PNW, I was worried about the flatness of the horizon but quickly realized that what Indiana lacks in mountains, Indianapolis makes up for with cool urban trails, neat neighborhoods and affordable stuff to do. Overall, this felt like an ideal city to do residency — and more specifically — a fantastic place to do a med-peds residency.

Hobbies: Soccer, Golf, Hiking, Spikeball, Washington DC and Miami Hurricanes Sports, Medical Podcasts

Residency Reflection: Having the largest residency class means I always have a co-resident free to hang out with after a long shift or week, and there’s always a senior or graduate who I can seek advice with for my career interests. As a medical podcast junkie, we have awesome weekly conferences that have featured IU med-peds grads including “Kidney Boy” Dr. Joel Topf and Dr. Chris ”The Chiu Man” Chiu from The Curbsiders. The volume, diversity and level of care offered from our five hospitals on a single campus is, in my opinion, unmatched. Our global health and Morris Green programs offer remarkable opportunities. Finally, I love Indianapolis! Incredible food, drink, sports and culture, something fun to do any night of the week, it’s extremely affordable, and there’s no traffic! When evaluating programs in my residency search, I always ended up thinking back to my interview day with IU. That’s how I knew it was my dream program!

Hobbies: Horseback riding, frequenting farmers markets, cooking, discovering new restaurants with my husband

Residency Reflection: The strength of the residents and program leadership made it difficult to imagine going anywhere else  they set the bar very high! But beyond that, knowing that the internal medicine and pediatrics programs were both independently strong combined with the incredible diversity of patients and pathologies that you get to see given our large catchment area and multiple different hospitals made IU's program really stand out. Now having been a resident in the program, I can say the program size and med-peds presence at IU also makes a huge difference; no matter where you are, you are bound to run into another med-peds person, and it just makes the residency experience that much better.

Residency Reflection: I had an incredible experience with the med-peds residents here at IU while I was a medical student. They were some of the kindest, most driven people I had worked with, and they took a sincere interest in helping and teaching the medical students while providing top notch patient care. I chose IU med-peds to become part of that tradition of excellent patient care with a focus on teaching and medical education.

Hobbies: Hiking, camping, rock climbing, martial arts, cuddling my geriatric dog, and trying new restaurants with friends

Residency Reflection: The culture, people, and strong med-peds presence are what initially drew me to IU med-peds, and are the reasons that I am proud to be a resident here. The people at IU, including my co-residents, the program leadership and the faculty have been absolutely incredible. The supportive culture is so refreshing, and I feel fortunate to have a program director who advocates for and listens to his residents. Residency training can be tough, especially if you moved from out of state, with long work hours and a steep learning curve. Being at a program that feels like home, and having many (14 in each class so plenty of people to hang out with and lean on!) co-residents that feel like family, have been essential in my ability to adjust to residency and a new city/state so quickly. Finally, the med-peds program here is very well-established. At IU, people are excited to learn that you are med-peds, and numerous doors open up since many of our faculty across several specialties and the five hospital system are dual-trained as well. I could not be happier with my choice. Now that I am a resident at this program, I can say with 110% confidence that I would choose it again!

We get ample growth opportunities amongst the four EMRs, three times the group chats, and eight total ITEs - plus two board exams. I've made some lifelong friends in the clinic, on the soccer field and at the Indy 500. I feel well prepared for the next stage of my career and am excited to join the amazing annals of alumni!

Residency Reflection: IU checked all of the boxes I was looking for in a med-peds program — large size, strong med-peds presence at the institution, a large academic center with the opportunity to rotate through multiple hospitals, and a standalone children's hospital. Having a lot of fellow med-peds residents also provides plenty of opportunities for socializing which has been amazing for somebody not originally from the Midwest. I ultimately chose to come to IU because of the familial atmosphere I felt on interview day and the support I have received from my (now) co-residents along the way.

I felt that the residents all knew each other and were very close, despite the program being the largest med-peds program. IU has a wonderful program and the strength of the categorical programs are equal. I was looking for a strong pediatric program in addition to the medicine program and IU offered that. There is also a great med-peds presence at IU, which means lots of opportunities for mentorship! Overall, I was ecstatic to match with IU and am very grateful to have the opportunity to work with caring, hardworking and admirable co-residents and staff at a variety of teaching facilities (five total) over the next four years!

Residency Reflection: My journey as a med-peds resident and now chief resident has been a full-circle experience. Med-peds has allowed me to pursue my passions in pulmonary medicine and health equity, and I've been fortunate to learn from incredible med-peds trained pulmonary providers on both the adult and pediatric sides. Beyond professional achievements and learning, residency has been made so special by my fellow residents and friends. We have shared unforgettable and fun experiences at work, Camp Riley, and in Kenya. I love my little resident posse, and I cannot wait see what's in store for all of us in our next chapter.
