Internal Medicine-Pediatrics Current Residents

Chief Residents

Chief Residents provide leadership and support to residents in the combined Internal Medicine-Pediatrics Residency program. They serve as mentors and advocates for the residents and set a positive tone for the program.

2024-2025 Chief Residents

Lauren Carpenter

Originally from Evergreen, Colorado, I found myself in the Midwest for residency after attending Villanova University for undergrad and the University of Colorado for medical school. I fell in love with Med-Peds as a specialty at the very end of my third year of medical school. I was so impressed not only by how clinically well-rounded Med-Peds residents and faculty were, but how supportive and approachable they were as I decided on a career path.

Lauren Carpenter Headshot

These tenets of Med-Peds rang especially true when I interviewed at IU School of Medicine. IU offered the chance to train in a rigorous academic setting with strong categorical Internal Medicine and Pediatrics programs, and after I met the residents and faculty involved in IU Med-Peds I was sold. The day I matched at IU I was welcomed into the IU Med-Peds community, and it has given me a foundation of support I will be forever grateful for. As the largest Med-Peds residency in the country, IU not only has a palpable on-campus Med-Peds presence, but a nationwide network of alumni and mentors.

Like my path to Med-Peds as a specialty choice during medical school, I decided to apply to Sports Medicine fellowship late in my third year of residency. Training at IU has allowed me to provide coverage at a variety of levels, from local high school football to Division I athletics. In true Med-Peds fashion, I hope to ultimately combine my specialty training in Sports Medicine with a primary care practice (and spend a few weeks a year as an inpatient hospitalist if I can get away with it). My IU family has supported my career exploration throughout residency, and I can't wait to see where my next steps take me!

I hope to leave a legacy of resident advocacy and support as a chief resident. The beauty of Med-Peds is the diversity of strengths and passions it attracts. My goal as a chief resident is to encourage our residents to pursue their own "why Med-Peds," and to support them in their unique Med-Peds journey.

Charles Shofner

Kentucky born and raised; you can still hear the southern accent come out when I am on nights. I moved off to the “big city”, Louisville (or Luh-vul as we say) for college and stayed for medical school where I graduated with a Distinction in Global and Public Health.

Charles Shofner Headshot

During medical school, I was drawn to the diverse and dynamic field of Med-Peds. To me, the greatest strength of Med-Peds has always been knowing how to combine the systematic approach of an internist with the family-centeredness style and passion for advocacy of a pediatrician. I believe that by cross-applying the skills you learn from both, you can improve the care you provide for all. In addition, Med-Peds also provided me with a strong foundation for a career in global health. For those both locally and abroad whose access is limited, that comprehensive knowledge in internal medicine and pediatrics proves indispensable.

My journey led me to IU School of Medicine, where I found a community that was not only supportive but also deeply committed to the professional and personal growth of its residents. So many things stood out to me about IU, but one of the biggest was the strong presence of Med-Peds at IU. From 55 co-residents to fellows to staff, around every corner, there is a Med-Peds provider. A support system that understands the unique challenges a Med-Peds resident faces is priceless. From a program standpoint, I was drawn because of the vision of global health centering on sustainable, capacity-building partnerships in Kenya. I had the privilege of living there for 8 weeks this past year practicing medicine. However, it is really my co-residents who have made the last four years a highlight of my life; from cake parties while on Riley nights to trivia at Dugout every Wednesday, there is never a shortage of fun.

As a chief resident, I am excited to contribute to the continued excellence of our program. My goal is to support our residents in achieving their full potential, whether they are navigating the challenges of clinical work or exploring their own unique career paths. I am particularly passionate about highlighting disparities in medicine and expanding resident knowledge of the intersection of business and medicine. I am looking forward to meeting you on the interview trail and helping you choose the right program for you!

The program’s size is a huge perk too — you instantly have an enormous support group, a great institutional med-peds culture, and a phenomenal network of alumni to learn from! On top of that, Indianapolis is genuinely a cool city with great trails, food, sports and breweries. I was thrilled to match at IU School of Medicine and happy to call Indy home!

Whether on the Pediatrics or Internal Medicine side, the Med-Peds residents always thought outside of the box and provided insights that helped keep the team well-rounded. Residency Reflection: Attending medical school here, there was rarely a rotation without a Med-Peds resident or faculty member, which is one of the reasons I chose IU. I worked with Dr. Brady, our program director, on my internal medicine rotation, and he sold me on Med-Peds. Everyone here is supportive, encouraging, and showcase a wide variety of experiences- demonstrating the limitless opportunities we have as a Med-Peds trained physician. We rotate through the five major hospitals downtown, working with diverse patient populations at each hospital. We also have FQHC clinics with our own patient panel, which was another major draw for me. Lastly, IU is unique in that it has the CYACC clinic which is dedicated to preparing children with complex medical conditions in their transition into adulthood.

As a medical podcast junkie, we have awesome weekly conferences that have featured IU Med Peds grads including “Kidney Boy” Dr. Joel Topf and Dr. Chris ”The Chiu Man” Chiu from The Curbsiders. The volume, diversity, and level of care offered from our 5 hospitals on a single campus is, in my opinion, unmatched. Our Global Health and Morris Green programs offer remarkable opportunities. Finally, I love Indy! Incredible food, drink, sports and culture, something fun to do any night of the week, it’s extremely affordable, and there’s no traffic! But beyond that, knowing that the internal medicine and pediatrics programs were both independently strong combined with the incredible diversity of patients and pathologies that you get to see given our large catchment area and multiple different hospitals made IU's program really stand out. Now having been a resident in the program, I can say the program size and Med/Peds presence at IU also makes a huge difference; no matter where you are, you are bound to run into another Med-Peds person, and it just makes the residency experience that much better.

Hobbies: Hiking, camping, rock climbing, martial arts, cuddling my geriatric dog, and trying new restaurants with friends

Residency Reflection: The culture, people, and strong Med-Peds presence are what initially drew me to IU Med-Peds, and are the reasons that I am proud to be a resident here. The people at IU, including my co-residents, the program leadership, and the faculty have been absolutely incredible. The supportive culture is so refreshing, and I feel fortunate to have a program director who advocates for and listens to his residents. Residency training can be tough, especially if you moved from out of state, with long work hours and a steep learning curve. Being at a program that feels like home, and having many (14 in each class so plenty of people to hang out with and lean on!) co-residents that feel like family, have been essential in my ability to adjust to residency and a new city/state so quickly. Finally, the med-peds program here is very well-established. At IU, people are excited to learn that you are med-peds, and numerous doors open up since many of our faculty across several specialties and the 5 hospital system are dual-trained as well. I could not be happier with my choice. Now that I am a resident at this program, I can say with 110% confidence that I would choose it again!

Medical School: Baylor College of Medicine

Career Plans: High-value care, quality improvement, dual hospitalist

Hobbies: Soccer, running, reading fantasy/fiction, going to Torchy's and other Texas-themed things

Residency Reflection: IU had all the things I was looking for in a program: great training sites (nationally ranked free-standing children's hospital, county, and VA), a strong Med-Peds presence and reputation (with some cool notable alumni), and nice people with whom I felt I got along (even over a virtual interview). How happy I was to find all of that confirmed and more upon arriving, when I was met with such kindness and support. I traded in Southern Hospitality for Hoosier Hospitality and I am proud to be a part of the IU Med-Peds fam!

Hometown: Oakton, VA

Medical School: New York Medical College

Career Plan: Transitional care, medical education, will likely pursue a fellowship but not sure what specialty just yet!

Hobbies: Live music, soccer, basketball, vinyl record collecting, hiking, trying new restaurants

Residency Reflection: IU checked all of the boxes I was looking for in a Med-Peds program -- large size, strong med-peds presence at the institution, a large academic center with the opportunity to rotate through multiple hospitals, and a standalone children's hospital. Having a lot of fellow med-peds residents also provides plenty of opportunities for socializing which has been amazing for somebody not originally from the Midwest. I ultimately chose to come to IU because of the familial atmosphere I felt on interview day and the support I have received from my (now) co-residents along the way.

Residency Reflection: I loved working with the Med-Peds residents as a medical student. Everyone was so welcoming and always willing to teach. I felt that the residents all knew each other and were very close, despite the program being the largest Med-Peds program. IU has a wonderful program and the strength of the categorical programs are equal. I was looking for a strong pediatric program in addition to the medicine program and IU offered that. There is also a great Med-Peds presence at IU, which means lots of opportunities for mentorship! Overall, I was ecstatic to match with IU and am very grateful to have the opportunity to work with caring, hardworking, and admirable co-residents and staff at a variety of teaching facilities (5 total) over the next four years!

Residency Reflection: IU was my first interview of the season, and quickly became the program I compared all others too. The residents are down-to-earth and are equally comfortable pulling out clinical pearls as kicking back and enjoying a drink at a local brewery or tearing up the soccer field. The size of the program inherently attracts people with diverse interests within Internal Medicine/Pediatrics, and IU has enough resources to facilitate all of our career goals. Plus, when life happens, multiple people step up to help each other out, which has been great in a new city!

Hobbies: Sports have always been a big part of my life; I love watching and playing any sports I can. I played lacrosse in college at IU. I am a huge Philadelphia sports fan #gobirds. I binge watch a fair amount of reality TV, or at least have it on in the background while I'm reading a book.

Residency Reflection: You really can't beat having such a strong faculty presence of Med-Peds doctors, whether you're on the medicine or pediatrics side. Both faculty and residents alike, are well integrated amongst their peers. I also think IU is unique because there are so many opportunities for research and advocacy that are well integrated into the curriculum. Additionally, we have the ability to work with faculty on projects even with busy resident schedules. It was an easy decision to stay at IU!

Career Plans: Academic Adult Hospital Medicine & Pediatrics Infectious Disease, plus Global Health

Hobbies: trying new restaurants, learning languages, traveling, tennis/volleyball, buying houseplants

Residency Reflection: One huge strength of IU Med-Peds is how many Med-Peds faculty are available not only in hospital medicine but also in sub-specialty fields. This lends to a lot of great mentors & a nice view of all the different options post-residency. I also really appreciate how many hospitals we rotate at within internal medicine as it gives a great glance into different practices/hospital cultures (and helps us feel comfortable using EPIC/Cerner/CPRS!). Regarding the pediatric side of things, I’ve come to appreciate how subspecialty-specific the children’s hospital is as we get to learn pediatric medicine from each specialty expert. Finally, I love love love my Spanish- & Haitian-Creole-speaking populations that I get to take care of in clinic!!

Hometown: Pittsburgh, PA

Medical School: The Ohio State University College of Medicine

Career Plans: Combined Med-Peds Hospitalist

Hobbies: Cheering for Pittsburgh and Ohio State sports, golfing, discovering new restaurants and breweries, binge-watching Netflix

Residency Reflection: I was initially drawn to the large program size and family-like atmosphere and camaraderie of IU Med-Peds, as it felt like a place where I could easily fit in yet also develop my own identity. Reflecting on several years of residency, that has absolutely held true. For being such a large residency program, I feel like we are truly a very close-knit community. Additionally, the program has offered an equally strong training in both Internal Medicine and Pediatrics that can foster development in all fields of medicine including primary care, hospitalist medicine, and a wide variety of subspecialty care. It features a strong stand-alone children's hospital as well as multiple IM training sites and hospitals with a diversity of strengths and cultures.
