General and Community Pediatrics

The Division of General and Community Pediatrics is a robust team of faculty and staff dedicated to academic excellence and leadership in general pediatric health care through outstanding patient service; comprehensive training of medical students, residents, and faculty; innovative research; and family-centered advocacy for patients and their communities.

IU School of Medicine Department of Pediatrics is a national leader in community pediatrics and was one of only 10 pediatrics residencies nationally named as a recipient of the Community Pediatrics Training Initiative (previously known as Dyson Initiative). This grant is designed to foster partnerships with the community, promote the role of pediatricians as community leaders and advocates, and strengthen community activities through interdisciplinary collaborations.

Exceptional Clinical Training Facilities

Primary teaching sites consist of a variety of outpatient clinics, where learners include undergraduate students, medical students and allied professional students, residents and fellows. General and Community Pediatrics serve a variety of patients, from underserved inner-city youth and refugee children to patients at suburban practices, large hospital-based practices and clinics focused on children with special health care needs. Faculty in this division are dedicated to providing excellent patient and family-focused care that is evidence-based, compassionate, and timely.

Impactful Education Programs

Impactful Education Programs

Community and General Pediatrics is a favorite training area among medical students and residents and each year a few general pediatric faculty members receive IU Trustee Teaching Awards. Among all pediatric clerkships, medical students routinely choose pediatric primary care settings as their best educational experience. The division’s education mission includes providing health care professionals with the latest information and tools to maintain excellence in their field and enabling them to provide family and patient education and support.
