The Neuro-ophthalmology Fellowship trains physicians to be experts in vision disorders involving the brain and cranial nerves.

Neuro-ophthalmology Fellowship

The Department of Neurology at Indiana University School of Medicine offers a one-year fellowship in neuro-ophthalmology. Neuro-ophthalmology is a subspecialty bridging the knowledge and clinical care gap between the specialties of neurology and ophthalmology. The subspecialty encompasses vision disorders involving the brain and cranial nerves.

Patients with neuro-ophthalmic disorders frequently require extensive and time-consuming clinical evaluations. These patients clearly benefit from subspecialty expertise in the management of their conditions and to help prevent harm. Specialists are in high-demand as there are few neuro-ophthalmologists in the United States, with very few fellowship-trained neuro-ophthalmologists currently practicing in the state of Indiana.

Application Requirements

Applicants must be US citizens or have permanent resident status and be eligible for licensure in Indiana. Applicants will need to be on track to successfully complete an ACGME-accredited ophthalmology or neurology residency program in the United States before the start of their neuro-ophthalmology fellowship.

Fellows gain clinical training by rotating between the IU Neuro-Ophthalmology Clinic, Circle City Neuro-Ophthalmology (private practice) and the Eskenazi Ophthalmology Clinic. The fellow will spend most of their clinical time at the IU Neuro-Ophthalmology Clinic and additional time at the Circle City Neuro-Ophthalmology Clinic and the Eskenazi Eye Clinic.

The fellowship will include a monthly neuro-ophthalmology case conference. A journal club meeting will also be held regularly where the fellow will discuss articles from the medical literature relevant to neuro-ophthalmology. Fellows will also deliver a minimum of three didactic lectures per year to ophthalmology and/or neurology residents and be invited to attend weekly Ophthalmology Grand Rounds.

Dedicated time to pursue neuro-ophthalmology research projects will be granted for an average of 0.5–1 day per week.
