Message from the Neuro-Ophthalmology Fellowship Director

Welcome to the Neuro-Ophthalmology Fellowship at Indiana University School of Medicine. We are dedicated to providing you with an exceptional year of training that will prepare you to become a compassionate, skilled and confident neuro-ophthalmologist. Our program offers the clinical depth, research opportunity and teaching experience necessary to launch a fulfilling and successful career in this unique subspecialty.

Our one-year fellowship is highly customizable to match your clinical interests and career goals. The majority of your time will be spent in the neuro-ophthalmology clinic at Goodman Hall — a state-of-the-art facility — where you will work closely with experienced faculty and see a wide range of adult and pediatric patients. Surgical exposure is available for those with an ophthalmology background and is tailored based on your interest. In addition to outpatient care, you'll also be involved in consultations from the inpatient services, patient communication and triaging, giving you comprehensive experience in managing neuro-ophthalmic disease.

Teaching is central to our mission. You will help train both neurology and ophthalmology residents through hands-on teaching in clinic, didactic lectures and our monthly neuro-ophthalmology case conference. You’ll also have the chance to lead a quarterly journal club and neuroradiology conferences. IU School of Medicine offers robust faculty development tools to help you grow as a clinical educator.

We value scholarship and support our fellows in pursuing research with protected time and travel funds for conference presentations. You will have weekly one-on-one meetings with the fellowship director to discuss clinical learning and research progress. Fellows typically attend the North American Neuro-Ophthalmology Society (NANOS) Annual Meeting, the Upper Midwest Neuro-Ophthalmology Meeting in Chicago, and either American Academy of Neurology (AAN) or American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO).

Our team includes nationally recognized leaders in neuro-ophthalmology who are committed to your success, mentorship and well-being. The environment is collegial and collaborative — our fellows often find that they not only grow professionally, but form lasting friendships here.

Thank you for your interest in our program. We are proud of the community and training we’ve built, and we look forward to helping you grow into the neuro-ophthalmologist you aspire to become.
