Message from the Vascular Neurology Fellowship Director

Welcome to the vascular neurology fellowship page! Thank you for your interest in the program. Indiana University has a long history of vascular neurology excellence with past leaders within the division including Mark Dyken, MD, and Jose Biller, MD.  Acknowledging our roots as stroke leaders, the current stroke division has renewed energy with the fellowship firmly planted in the middle. After several decades of closure, the fellowship re-opened in 2024 with the first graduate in 2025. Let this letter serve as a quick overview of the stroke division and fellowship but I would invite you to reach out with any questions.

The vascular neurology group at Indiana University Health is currently composed of eight vascular neurologists with various backgrounds, experiences and interests. In addition to the core faculty at IU Health there are two additional stroke faculty working at the Veterans Hospital and Eskenazi Hospital. The endovascular group includes radiology, neurology and neurological surgery with a current fellowship under the direction of Bradley Bohnstedt, MD.

The fellowship is a one-year program with two positions. Based out of IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, a comprehensive stroke center, with one rotation at the Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana. Clinic is held in the Neuroscience Center, which is connected to Methodist Hospital by skywalk. Fellows share an office in the Neuroscience Center.

The stroke service is mainly a consulting service for Methodist Hospital, working closely with the residency program it is composed of several teams. The inpatient stroke team sees all currently admitted stroke patients. There is an “acute service” that works during business hours to care for all in-house stroke activations, transfer center calls, telestroke calls and mobile stroke unit patients. Stroke staff provide 24-hour coverage for acute stroke care and consulting questions. Additionally, a vascular neurology staff covers a general neurology team at Methodist Hospital. The telestroke service currently serves three outlying sites with plans to expand both within the IU Health system and beyond.

As a vascular fellow at Indiana University School of Medicine, we are committed to you, your pursuit of knowledge and your ongoing development as a physician. The fellowship is designed with flexibility in the schedule to help prioritize a fellow’s individual goals for the year. At the end of the fellowship year, we want you to feel confident pursuing your next step whether that remains in academics, in private practice or another realm of vascular neurology.
