The Pediatric Epilepsy program in the Department of Neurology at Indiana University School of Medicine is a Level 4 comprehensive epilepsy center—certified by the National Association Epilepsy Centers (NAEC)—that includes new onset and refractory epilepsy clinics, ketogenic and modified Atkins diet programs, comprehensive epilepsy surgery evaluation and a six-bed epilepsy monitoring unit. The program has a thriving neurophysiology department with robust volumes of both routine and prolonged electroencephalograms.
The pediatric epilepsy surgery program, in cooperation with the pediatric neurosurgery specialty, has been working diligently to improve identification and surgical treatment of epilepsy patients with medically refractory epilepsy. Patients are evaluated by an epileptologist and undergo testing to better understand their epilepsy. Their case is reviewed at a multi-disciplinary epilepsy surgery conference. The program offers resective epilepsy surgery (lesional and non-lesional), laser interstitial thermal therapy, disconnection procedures (hemispherotomy/ hemispherectomy), and palliative procedures including vagal nerve stimulator and corpus callosotomy. The pediatric epilepsy program has grown remarkably over the past decade and has consolidated its position as the statewide leader in pediatric care in the state of Indiana.
