A Message from the Program Director

Welcome to the Indiana University School of Medicine Southwest Indiana Internal Medicine Residency program.

Our program is sponsored by the Indiana University School of Medicine and is part of the Graduate Medical Education Consortium, an initiative of allied IU residency programs intended to provide care and to address the physician shortage in the region. IU School of Medicine provides a formidable armamentarium of support, in the form of dedicated personnel, funding, and other resources to ensure the clinical and academic success of the program. IU School of Medicine has a proven history of excellence in medical education and we are pleased to be directly involved in teaching and supervising medical students on our services and clinics. We are proud to be the largest program within the consortium and the tip of the spear in its mission.

We are also proud to have highly qualified and motivated residents with diverse background experiences, a robust teaching faculty with a longstanding, strong commitment to graduate medical education, as well as supporting sponsoring institution and hospitals leadership. Our focus is to serve our communities and to train primary care physicians who excel in providing best possible care to the people of Southwest Indiana. We continue the legacy of innovation and excellence in medical education with robust clinical experiences in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

The program is in full compliance with ACGME. Our training sites at Good Samaritan Hospital and Ascension St. Vincent Hospital provide contrasting experiences with rural and urban populations, a variety of subspecialty and procedural rotations, and state-of-the-art outpatient experiences in our Residency-Faculty Practices.

Our goals are to serve our communities, to excel in medical education, providing a broad training experience and state of the art healthcare to the people of Southwest. From community physicians, nursing personnel, allied health providers, and senior administration, Southwest Indiana has embraced the program its pursuit of training the complete internist, one who can provide top-notch care to the region.

Most demonstrative of our program are the residents themselves! We have a proven legacy of recruiting high-performing residents from highly ranked medical schools, nationally, internationally and locally in Indiana. Our residents have presented at national conferences and have publications in internationally recognized journals such as the British Medical Journal. Finally, they provide the bulk of internal medicine care in the Southwest region of Indiana. They are hardworking, trailblazing, and adventurous, qualities that make them uniquely suited to building and establishing a residency program.

I welcome you to explore what we have to offer here at the Southwest Indiana Internal Medicine Residency Program, where we are the leaders in medical education in the region.
