Message from the Director

Thank you for considering our fellowship. We are a recently approved program that is uniquely positioned to provide a robust operative and team coverage experience for prospective fellows.

Clinical rotations are organized with a mentorship model in mind. Fellows will work full-time with one to two faculty per rotation. There are four core rotations that are 2 ½ months long as well as a two month elective rotation at the conclusion of the year. The core rotations consist of a hip preservation rotation, an adult knee and shoulder rotation, a pediatric orthopedic sports medicine rotation, and a shoulder and elbow rotation. As a fellowship program at a tertiary referral center, fellows will be exposed to cases ranging from 'bread and butter' sports medicine procedures to complex revision surgeries.

The two month elective rotation at the end of the year is meant to allow fellows to further explore areas of specific interest or gain additional exposure to specific procedures to meet the fellow's anticipated needs in practice. Additionally, throughout the year, fellows are encouraged to join rare or particularly educational cases regardless of their current rotation assignments. As an example, we have a high yearly volume of multi-ligament knee injuries as part of one of the busiest Level One orthopedic trauma centers in the country; fellows are encouraged to participate in these cases throughout the year.

We are proud to offer a robust team coverage experience across a range of competitive levels. In the fall, fellows will work closely with the recent national champion Indiana University football team as well as the Ball State University football team. Fellows will also gain team coverage experience with collegiate basketball and spring season sports. Significant autonomy will be given to the fellow with training room coverage throughout the year with the Indiana University Columbus campus athletics program. Fellows will also assist with professional team coverage including Indy Eleven men's soccer and Indy Ignite women's volleyball.

Fellows have access to extensive clinical research support including three full-time clinical research fellows and a clinical research coordinator. Several of our faculty are heavily involved in clinical research ranging from single site clinical outcome studies to multicenter trials. Completion of a minimum of one clinical research project is necessary to meet ACGME requirements, with additional research involvement encouraged.

Please do not hesitate to contact us with questions. You can reach our fellowship coordinator Hollyn Mangione at hmangion@iu.edu.
