Research During Fellowship

Fellows in the Lower Extremity and Adult Reconstruction Fellowship program must complete and present a research project during their year-long fellowship. This research project and curriculum prepare fellows for careers in academic health centers and strengthen their critical thinking abilities.

To complete the research requirement, fellows gather data and complete thorough data analysis, use high-quality methodology, and make conclusions that advance the field. The research project culminates in submission to a peer-reviewed journal for publication.

Research Support

Fellows work with the program director and faculty mentors to complete their chosen study throughout the year. They are expected to submit an abstract to AAHKS, AAOS and MAOA; present the project at the year-end graduation and Orthopaedic Surgery Department Garceau-Wray Lectureship; and submit a manuscript for publication.

The department provides a uniquely supportive environment for fellows to perform research. A structured research curriculum, associated timelines and dedicated meetings are built into the academic calendar to ensure success.

Fellows have access to various research labs, researchers and national databases to facilitate high-quality research. Full-time research coordinators improve the efficiency of the research projects and provide fellows with administrative support to complete projects in a timely fashion.
