Lower Extremity Adult Reconstruction Fellowship

The Lower Extremity Adult Reconstruction Fellowship at Indiana University School of Medicine is a one-year program recognized by the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS). The fellowship encompasses nearly all aspects of lower extremity adult reconstruction, including primary and revision hip and knee arthroplasty.

The fellowship also includes:

Unicompartmental knee arthroplasty.
Minimally invasive surgical techniques.
Direct anterior and posterior-based hip surgical approaches.
Computer-assisted surgical techniques.

Emphasis is placed on complex revision hip and knee reconstruction, including the surgical treatment of peri-prosthetic infection.

Applicants must have completed an orthopaedic surgery residency program. A $100 non-refundable registration fee and additional fees apply for applications sent by the match program to specific fellowship programs.

Clinical Experience

Fellows rotate for four months each with J. Andrew Parr, MD, at IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis; Leonard Buller, MD, and Kevin Sonn, MD, at IU Health Saxony Hospital in Fishers; and R. Michael Meneghini, MD, at Indiana Joint Replacement Institute in Fishers, Terre Haute and Fort Wayne.

While completing rotations in Indianapolis and Fishers, fellows act as independent faculty at the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center.

Fellows are responsible for inpatient and outpatient musculoskeletal care, emphasizing evidence-based decision-making. Training includes didactic lectures, case presentations, critical reviews of peer-reviewed journals, weekly indications conferences and an extensive surgical and office experience with the various faculty surgeons. The opportunity for clinical and basic science research is offered and encouraged throughout the fellowship.

Admissions

All Lower Extremity Adult Reconstruction Fellowship applicants must apply for open positions exclusively through the San Francisco Match. The American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS), the Hip Society and the Knee Society sponsor the fellowship match. Registration and match are administered by the San Francisco Matching Program (SF Match), designed to be a transparent, unbiased match process. The match takes place in April, one year before the active start date, and after the application and interview process has ended and confidential rank lists are sent to the SF Match.
