Disability Accommodations

According to a recent school-wide survey, the prevalence of residents and trainees with disability in IU School of Medicine programs (6%) is higher than that represented in the benchmark (4%). The Office of Graduate Medical Education strives to meet the needs of these trainees and welcomes other talented individuals with disabilities to join our team. This page outlines accreditation requirements as they relate to disability, the process to request accommodations and provides links to disability related resources.

At Indiana University School of Medicine, we are committed to fostering an inclusive, supportive and equitable learning environment for all residents and fellows. In alignment with the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Institutional and Program Requirements, we ensure that trainees with disabilities have access to reasonable accommodations that enable them to thrive in their clinical training and professional development.

ACGME Institutional and Program Requirements

Per ACGME guidelines:

  • Sponsoring institutions must have a policy regarding disability accommodations that complies with all applicable laws and regulations (IV.I.4).

  • Residency and fellowship programs, in partnership with the sponsoring institution, must promote healthy and safe learning environments and provide accommodations for trainees with disabilities as per institutional policy (1.D.2.e).

Requesting Accommodations at IU School of Medicine

Residents and fellows who need accommodations due to a disability should follow the process outlined in our IU School of Medicine GME Accommodations for Disability policy. The process will require a timely evaluation by a licensed professional and submitting a confidential request through the Office of Civil Rights Compliance. We encourage those seeking accommodations to read through the policy thoroughly before submitting requests.
