Vascular Surgery Residency

Welcome to the Vascular Surgery Residency program at Indiana University School of Medicine. Led by national leaders in vascular training, our program develops your skills to care for both simple and complex surgical patients in a supportive learning environment while fostering competency and increased autonomy in the operating room. Our program is a comprehensive five years of clinical training with two dedicated years of required professional development time.

Our clinical experiences are provided by IU Health, Eskenazi Health, and the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center located both downtown and around suburban Indianapolis, offering a comprehensive exposure to the breadth and depth of surgical practice, both in the operating room and at the bedside.

Graduates from our program seamlessly transition to either the academic or private practice setting in both urban and rural areas. Our program provides opportunities for residents to foster their own personal and professional growth, as well as offering ample support and flexibility for our residents when needed.

Resident Research and Professional Development

Surgical residents can pause their clinical training after the second year and pursue a two-year period of professional development. This time includes participating in clinical, basic/translational or education-based research. Residents select a funded faculty mentor in their field of interest and begin meeting with them during their second year. Residents are encouraged to apply for extramural grants to support their work. Residents also have the opportunity to pursue a master's degree, which the Department of Surgery will help finance.

Global Health and AMPATH

At IU School of Medicine, resident physicians can immerse themselves in global health through our training pathway and diverse electives, enhancing their skills in international health care. The Global Health Pathway is open to all specialty residents, offering local and overseas electives with dedicated faculty mentors. This interdepartmental program unites residents from various specialties, fostering a shared commitment to delivering comprehensive healthcare worldwide. Notably, our AMPATH-Kenya initiative, one of the world's most significant collaborative healthcare efforts, invites residents from medicine, pediatrics, surgery, and obstetrics and gynecology to engage in a life-changing and career-changing one or two-month elective at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital.

Pre-departure orientation, in-country education, and debriefing sessions ensure a meaningful experience.
