Surgical Education Research

The Surgical Education Research Fellowship at IU School of Medicine Department of Surgery is a two year professional development opportunity for general surgery and integrated surgical sub-specialty trainees with an interest in surgical education. The fellowship is accredited by the American College of Surgeons Accredited Educational Institutes (ACS-AEI).

Fellows gain experience in surgical simulation and in designing, implementing and evaluating multi-disciplinary educational curricula. Additionally, fellows design, implement, analyze, present and publish the results of their research projects that span a wide variety of education topics. Fellows are afforded numerous opportunities for national and international research collaboration with other centers and investigators. Fellows are expected to present their works of scholarship during Surgical Education Week, the joint meeting of the Association for Surgical Education and the Association for Program Directors in Surgery, the American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress Education Forum, the annual ACS-AEI Simulation Summit in Chicago, Illinois, the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), the International Meeting of Simulation in Healthcare, and other national meetings. Through these activities, fellows have access to thought leaders and peers in the field of surgical education.

MHPE Degree Requirement

Surgery residents that participate in the surgical education research fellowship also enroll in the MHPE program at either University of Illinois-Chicago or University of Cincinnati at no cost to the resident.
