Along with more than 500,000 square feet of space available for research activities in a dozen buildings on the Indianapolis campus, IU School of Medicine faculty, staff and students are advancing discoveries in research facilities at our other statewide campuses and partner sites.

The Indiana University Academic Health Center is composed of three hospitals located one mile apart from each other. IU Health University Hospital and Methodist Hospital are adult hospitals of which Methodist Hospital serves as one of the city’s Level 1 Trauma Centers. Riley Children’s Hospital is the state’s only Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center. Combined, all three hospitals maintain a capacity of 1,291 beds and see an estimated 1.9 million patients annually.

The Department of Surgery’s clinical trials support team partners with investigators to guide studies from concept to completion. We provide expertise in feasibility, budgeting, regulatory compliance and trial execution, helping ensure each study runs smoothly. Our resources span a network of hospitals, specialized research centers and industry partnerships, enabling high-quality trials across a wide range of specialties.

Clinical Research Centers

The Clinical Research Centers (CRCs) are a component of the Indiana CTSI. There are three CRCs offered through Indiana CTSI on the IU Indianapolis campus, at IU Health University Hospital, Riley Hospital for Children and the Neuroscience Center of Excellence in Goodman Hall.

Indiana Clinical Translational Science Institute

The Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (CTSI) epitomizes a culture of collaboration among the state’s premier research universities, comprised of the IU School of Medicine, Purdue University and the University of Notre Dame, and robust public-private partnerships. The institute also nurtures important connections with the region’s leading biomedical research and business organizations, with full support from the state government.

CTSI aims to foster an infrastructure that promotes the translation of basic laboratory, a pillar of research, and population-based research into clinical trials and health practices.

Research Service Cores

Research at IU School of Medicine is supported by designated institutional cores and shared resources. These facilities offer cutting-edge scientific services, enabling access to high-end equipment, advanced technologies, and specialized expertise for all school investigators. Core facilities are a pivotal part of the university’s research infrastructure, providing resources that allow groundbreaking science to occur. The Core Facilities Administration provides financial support, administrative oversight, professional development, assessment, and communication of shared research resources to advance the research mission of the IU School of Medicine.
