The curriculum for the Surgical Critical Care Fellowship includes block rotations as well as conferences and teaching experience.
Surgical Critical Care Rotations
Surgical Intensive Care Unit at IU Health University Hospital (four months)
The University Hospital SICU service is a consult service in a closed unit design. Services admitting to this SICU include general surgery, thoracic surgery, urology, ENT, plastics, gynecology and orthopedics admitting primarily oncological and hepato-pancreatic-biliary conditions providing a broad range of complexity and acuity.
Surgical/Trauma Critical Care Unit at IU Health Methodist Hospital (three months ICU and one month surgery)
A robust surgical critical care service manages both trauma and emergency general surgery patients. Fellows also participate in trauma resuscitations and operative management of the ICU patient. The fellows participate in a night float experience as the lead of the trauma/EGS team for a single month.
Surgical Intensive Care Unit at Eskenazi Hospital (three months ICU and one month surgery)
The Eskenazi SICU service is a closed unit for all trauma and emergency general surgery patients and works collaboratively with all subspecialty services including vascular, thoracic, neurosurgery, etc. Fellows again participate in trauma resuscitations and operative management of the ICU patient. The fellows also staff the trauma/EGS service for a single month.
Elective Rotations
Medical Intensive Care Unit at Eskenazi Hospital
While rotating at Eskenazi Hospital, fellows have the opportunity to rotate on the MICU service. There are two- and four-week options that are reciprocated with the medical ICU service. This is a closed unit with all medical admissions managed by a dedicated ICU service.
Cardiac Anesthesia/TEE
While rotating at Methodist Hospital, fellows have the opportunity to rotate in the operating room with cardiac anesthesia. Here, they participate in intubations, placing pulmonary artery catheters and participating in transesophageal echocardiography.
Conferences
All fellows attend a weekly surgical critical care focused conference on Wednesday mornings after the departmental M&M session. In addition, hospital specific weekly conferences are required to be attended by fellows assigned to those specific locations.
