The One Health Scholarly Concentration is designed to provide medical students with an opportunity to tackle real-world impact at the intersection of human, animal and plant health. The concentration draws upon the Purdue University One Health Initiative, a collaborative, multisectoral and transdisciplinary approach that integrates medicine, veterinary science, environmental health and public health to achieve optimal health outcomes for the population.
Students will develop a deeper understanding of the role animals and the environment play in the spread of infectious diseases that affect people, the role of the veterinary profession in control of these diseases, the importance of the human-animal bond, animals as sentinels for human disease and use of animal models in research of human diseases, for example.
Locations
Students participate on the IU School of Medicine—West Lafayette campus.
Curriculum and Timeline
Students complete the same core curriculum as students in other concentrations. The concentration topic-specific courses introduce students to key public health topics at the intersection of human, animal and environmental health, including zoonotic and mosquito-borne diseases, outbreak investigation, infectious disease modeling, risk communication, toxicology and the human-animal bond.
