The Artificial Intelligence in Medicine Scholarly Concentration is designed to prepare future physicians to understand, evaluate and apply AI technologies in medical education, clinical practice and research. The concentration is grounded in evidence-based pedagogy and delivered by a collaborative team of faculty from across IU School of Medicine’s statewide campuses. Participants will gain the knowledge and skills to leverage AI technology to improve healthcare.
Locations
All lectures are attended virtually allowing students statewide to attend. All coursework takes place online. Scholarly project work usually occurs in the student's IU School of Medicine campus, city and/or region or a mutually agreed upon site.
Curriculum and Timeline
Students will explore key principles of machine learning, predictive analytics, generative AI and large language models, gaining insight into how these tools are used and how they can be leveraged. Additionally, students will examine how decision support systems can aid diagnostic and therapeutic reasoning, recognize their limitations and apply appropriate levels of human oversight within everyday workflows. Topics include academic integrity, ethical and regulatory responsibilities, secure tool selection and HIPAA-compliant data handling, among others. Students will be able to apply AI technologies on their own learning and develop a fully formed AI-related research question.
