Dr. Ray Munguia-Vazquez, MD, MSc, PhD, is a Clinical Associate Professor of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the IU School of Medicine-West Lafayette. He earned his MD at the UAEMex in 2001 and started his graduate medical education in the field of Otolaryngology. He later obtained a master’s degree in 2006 and a PhD in 2010, both from the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. He then completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Auditory Neurosciences at the University of Calgary, Canada.

Dr. Munguia’s previous academic appointments include Assistant Professor of Audiology at Northern Illinois University; and Clinical Assistant Professor of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences at Purdue University.

Dr. Munguia joined IUSM initially as part time member in 2016, and as a full time faculty member in 2022. As the Director of Pre-Clinical Medical Education (Phase 1) at the West Lafayette Campus, he is primarly responsible for the administrative oversight of the didactic components of Phase 1 of the curriculum; including  co-directing the Biomedical Engineering-Applied Medical Technologies (BME-AMT), and the Care of the Hispanic and Latino Patients (CHLP) Scholarly Concentrations. He is also involved in teaching in multiple courses throughout both the first and second year courses; and serves as the Regional Campus Course Director/Site Leader for IUSM-WL’s Renal/Respiratory (R&R), Gastrointestinal System & Nutrition (GIN), and Endocrine Reproductive Musculoskeletal and Dermatologic (ERMD) courses.

Since joining IUSM, Dr. Munguia has continued to publish on the neurophysiological mechanisms of the auditory system, and now also publishes on Medical and Interprofessional Education. In addition, Dr. Munguia is an alumnus of the Leadership in Academic Medicine Program (LAMP) from IUSM, the Leadership and Management Foundations Program, and the Minority Faculty Leadership Development Program, both from the Association of American Medical Colleges.
