Adolescent Behavioral Health Research Program

The Adolescent Behavioral Health Research Program at Indiana University School of Medicine facilitates multidisciplinary collaboration of researchers, families and communities to advance the well-being of young people. Since 2018, our team has led innovative work in translational science, intervention and implementation science, and applied technology to improve access to high-quality mental health and substance use services for youth in Indiana and across the United States.

Our Vision

The vision of the Adolescent Behavioral Health Research Program is to improve the behavioral health and well-being of adolescents by conducting basic science research on adolescent development, creating and testing innovative interventions, and implementing services and programming at the local, state and national level.

Areas of Excellence

Research conducted by the Adolescent Behavioral Health Program is concentrated in the priority areas below:

Implementation Science

  • Implementation science research focuses on how to put evidence-based ideas into real-world practice, helping bridge the gap between research and everyday use.
  • Matthew Aalsma, PhD, Brigid Marriott, PhD and Allyson Dir, PhD

Development Neuroscience/Experimental Psychopathology

  • Developmental neuroscience explores how the brain grows and changes over time, helping us understand how early experiences shape learning, behavior, and health.
  • Leslie Hulvershorn, MD, Paola Pamela Mattey Mora, PhD, MPH, Joey Aloi, MD, PhD, Alex Miller, PhD, and Kathleen Crum, PhD

Clinical/Intervention and Translational Research

  • Clinical intervention and translational research focus on turning scientific discoveries into practical treatments and programs that improve health and well-being.
  • Leslie Hulvershorn, MD, Zachary Adams, PhD, Tamika Zapolski, PhD and Kelsey Wiggs, PhD

Suicide Prevention

  • Casey Pederson, PhD and Lauren O’Reilly, PhD

Community Engagement

  • Community engagement involves partnering with communities to ensure that research and services reflect their needs, priorities, and lived experiences.
  • Tamika Zapolski, PhD ( Youth Coalition Adult Advisory Groups consisting of clinicians, parents, and administrators) and Natalie Guerrero, MD, PhD, and Trey Dellucci, PhD

Disparities and Equity Research

  • The study of how structural inequities shape health outcomes for LGBTQ+ people and communities of color, using interdisciplinary and community-engaged approaches. It advances research, policy, and practice to reduce disparities and promote equitable, inclusive healthcare systems.
  • Trey Dellucci, PhD, Tamika Zapolski, PhD, and Natalie Guerrero, MD, PhD

Clinical Consultation and Service

  • Direct clinical services provide hands-on care, offering assessment, treatment, and support to individuals and families.

Research Groups

Zack Adams’s lab: Dr. Zack Adam’s lab in the Department of Psychiatry focuses on improving access to high-quality clinical services for children, teens and families impacted by mental health disorders and substance use.

Dir Lab: Dr. Ally Dir’s lab focuses on improving youth and parent engagement while navigating the juvenile justice system in order to facilitate youth development, engagement and positive system outcomes.

Health and Justice Lab: The Health and Justice Lab, led by Dr. Matt Aalsma, works to improve how vulnerable youth are screened, referred, and connected to mental and behavioral healthcare. The team focuses on children and adolescents involved in behavioral health and juvenile justice systems, striving to ensure they receive timely, evidence-based care and support.

Hulvershorn Lab: Dr. Hulvershorn’s lab in the Department of Psychiatry explores how youth make risky decisions, how the brain supports these choices, and how such decisions relate to outcomes like infectious disease risk, suicidal behavior, and substance use. The team also develops, and tests interventions designed to positively influence risky decision making.

PRISM Lab: Dr. Tamika Zapolski’s Prevention Research in Substance Use and Minority Health (PRISM) Lab within the Department of Psychiatry focuses on risk and protection for substance use and other health behaviors among racial/ethnic minority youths and young adults

SOLACE Lab: Dr. Pederson’s Solutions for Overcoming Life Threatening Actions and Crisis Events for Teens (SOLACE) Lab is dedicated to strengthening teen mental health care by improving early identification and access to mental health support. The lab delivers innovative solutions including clinical decision support tools, tele mental health services, and behavioral health screening with health care providers, juvenile justice systems, and families.

Youth Coalition (YOCO): The Indiana University School of Medicine’s Youth Coalition (YOCO), founded by Dr. Tamika Zapolski in 2023, brings together youth ages 13-18 from diverse backgrounds to help shape the future of mental health research.

How Can I Get Involved?

The program is dedicated to supporting the next generation of learners at all stages, helping them build knowledge, skills, and confidence to grow in their careers.
