Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetology Fellowship

The Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetology Fellowship at IU School of Medicine offers extensive clinical training and outstanding research training for future pediatric endocrinologists. The program has a strong track record in training combined medicine/pediatric endocrinology fellows who have dual board eligibility in four years. Graduates are highly competitive for placement in academic medical centers, private practice, or industry.

Diverse Faculty Interests

Faculty members are accomplished clinicians and are also nationally recognized in their respective areas of clinical and research expertise. The division is known for its excellence in clinical areas of pediatric endocrinology, including disorders of glucose metabolism, bone, puberty, and growth.

Curriculum

Pediatric endocrinology and diabetology fellows spend twelve months in clinical training and 24 months conducting either basic laboratory and/or clinical research.

IU School of Medicine to prepare more endocrinologists with the Endocrine Society’s Medical School Engagement Program

Indiana University School of Medicine has been selected as an inaugural participant in the Endocrine Society’s Medical School Engagement Program, intended to encourage more medical students to pursue careers in endocrinology. This award will help prepare more specialists in a field currently experiencing a shortage of specialists necessary to manage the increasing number of individuals affected by endocrine-related conditions.

IU endocrinologists receive esteemed JDRF awards for contributions to type 1 diabetes research

Two IU School of Medicine faculty members have been recognized for their significant contributions to type 1 diabetes research by the leading global research and advocacy organization for the disease, JDRF. Linda DiMeglio, MPH, MD, was announced as the co-recipient of the 2023 George Eisenbarth Award for Type 1 Diabetes Prevention, and Viral Shah, MD, received the 2023 Mary Tyler Moore and S. Robert Levine, MD, Excellence in Clinical Research Award.

Emmaline Swigert shows off her continuous glucose monitoring system

Clinical trial presents a pill of promise for type 1 diabetes

In March 2023, 10-year-old Emmaline Swigert was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune disease where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. Today, Emmaline is participating in an Indiana University School of Medicine-led clinical trial aimed at testing a pill that could help make life much easier for individuals like her living with the condition.
