Residency Admission Process

All application information for the Pathology Residency program at Indiana University School of Medicine must be submitted through the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS) and cannot be accepted via electronic or traditional mail. Review of applications is conducted by the departmental selection committee, starts when ERAS opens each year, and is performed on a rolling basis until the Dec. 1 application deadline. Applicants selected for an interview are invited to interview using the ERAS scheduler. Interviews occur from late October through January.

Five PGY-1 openings are available most years, although there may be yearly variability as a result of some residents pursuing different tracts.

Interview Process

Pathology residency interviews at IU School of Medicine will be hosted virtually based on national guidelines. We use Zoom for interviews and will email candidates details on how to connect for your interview.

Application Requirements

The following documents are required from ERAS to complete your application:

  • ERAS common application form
  • Curriculum vitae (CV)
  • Personal statement
  • Medical school transcript(s)
  • Medical student performance evaluation (also referred to as the "dean's letter")
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • USMLE and/or COMLEX scores

Admission Criteria

The most competitive applicants are recent or upcoming graduates with a demonstrated interest in pathology, strong USMLE performance and excellent letters of recommendation. The department takes a holistic approach to candidate selection; therefore, there is no minimum cutoff for USMLE/COMLEX scores.

All residency candidates must be eligible to obtain an Indiana State Medical License prior to the program start date.

Applicant must be a U.S. citizen or a permanent U.S. resident. Alternatively, if an applicant is neither, the applicant must have a valid U.S. work authorization or be eligible for the department to sponsor a visa as outlined below. Applicants must be fluent in speaking, writing and understanding English. It is preferred for candidates to have clinical experience in the U.S. or Canada.

With guidance from the Indiana University School of Medicine GME Office, we may consider sponsoring candidates under the following visa categories:

  • J-1
  • J-2 accompanied with Employment Authorization Document
  • H-4 accompanied with Employment Authorization Document
  • F-1 in OPT accompanied with Employment Authorization Document (change to J-1 or H-1B is required after one year of residency)
  • H1-B in these specific circumstances:
    • H-1B employees already in the United States and training under H-1B status with another employer and pursuing a change of employer (portability).
    • Candidates currently in the United States in other non-immigrant categories (F-1, H-4, J-1, J-2), who are pursuing change of status to H-1B from within the US.
  • O-1
  • Other visas may be considered on a case-by-case basis

All employment offers extended to individuals who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents must be contingent upon the applicant’s ability to secure an appropriate visa and corresponding employment authorization to work in the U.S.
