Genitourinary Pathology Fellowship

The ACGME-accredited Genitourinary Pathology Fellowship program at IU School of Medicine provides comprehensive training in all aspects of genitourinary pathology. Upon completing the program, fellows are prepared to assume a role as a subspecialty consultant in genitourinary pathology in an academic or private practice setting. The program is approved as a ACGME-accredited fellowship by the Graduate Medical Education Committee.

The Division of Genitourinary Pathology handles all adult genitourinary clinical material from the IU Health system in Indianapolis (including University Hospital, Methodist Hospital, IU Health North, and IU Health West hospitals). This provides a high volume of material that covers the full breadth of neoplastic and non-neoplastic diseases. Two major components of the genitourinary pathology service are the daily in-house surgical pathology cases and the outside case/consultation service.

Applications are accepted throughout the academic year. Invitations to interview will be extended to qualified candidates at the discretion of the program director.

Applicants must have completed two years of accredited anatomic pathology training, or meet fellow eligibility for ACGME Selective Pathology fellowship, and be able to obtain an Indiana medical license.

We accept the CAP Residents Forum Standardized fellowship application and require curriculum vitae, cover letter and/or personal statement, and three letters of recommendation, and a photo of applicant.

Clinical Training and Responsibilities 

The clinical responsibilities the fellows assume during the year of training include:

• Review of daily in-house GU biopsy and resection cases
• Review of outside case/consultation service
• Referrals for treatment at partner facilities
• Department faculty personal consultation
• Conference presentation at the monthly multidisciplinary GU Oncology conference
  

Research

Fellows are encouraged to participate in one or more research projects related to genitourinary pathology or quality improvement-related projects, submit and present the abstracts to local and national scientific meetings, and publish the data in peer-reviewed pathology/biomedical journals.

Teaching 

The fellowship offers opportunities in resident teaching, gross room supervision of residents and pathology assistants and additional opportunities for medical student teaching and building of digital archives.

Positions

We offer three one-year fellowship positions per year, all with a start date of July 1.

Salary and Benefits 

Fellows are paid a competitive annual salary and provided with healthcare benefits. The salary is based on the current salary for the fellow’s corresponding post-graduate year.
