General Information
IMPRS is the acronym for Indiana University Medical Student Program for Research and Scholarship.
IMPRS is an IU School of Medicine program to promote and support medical students’ involvement in research. The summer research program provides rising 2nd year medical students an opportunity to spend the summer between 1st and 2nd year working with faculty research mentors in various area of research.
During the internship, students will work with their matched mentor for a duration of 8-12 weeks. Students will attend weekly seminars and workshops provided by the program. Additionally, students will also attend other meetings, journal clubs, lab meetings etc. provided by their mentor. IMPRS students will complete all on-boarding requirements, assignments on Canvas, develop an abstract and present a project poster at the IMPRS Poster Symposium at the end of the summer session.
Yes, there are research opportunities at all nine campuses. Certain regional campuses will have a limited number of opportunities.
Yes, the IMPRS summer internship is paid. The stipend varies dependent on the type of support/grant with a range from $4,500–$6,000. The stipend is paid through the bursar and no tax will be deducted.
No, IMPRS does not provide housing.
The typical start date is a week after the spring semester concludes (i.e. 3rd or 4th Thursday of May).
The typical end date will be end of July.
Eligibility
First year medical student can apply for the IMPRS summer internship.
Only students who are in good standing at the time of submission and all acceptance will be contingent on the student’s good standing status at the end of the 2nd semester.
Yes, all Phase 1 Year 1 students from all nine campuses can apply for IMPRS.
No, you do not need to have prior research experience to apply.
No, you do not need to be in a scholarly concentration to apply to IMPRS.
If you decide to apply for a scholarly concentration, please discuss with your concentration's co-directors.
We will ask for your undergraduate GPA and MCAT scores on the application.
Application
The deadline for the application is January 15.
Applications will open in November. This is not a rolling acceptance process. All applications will be reviewed after the deadline.
It is not required. However, if you have a specific interest, you are welcome to find a mentor.
It is not required that you identify a mentor or request a letter of support from the mentor. If you have a mentor who is able and willing to take you as a mentee for the summer, be sure to mention this in your application. This piece of information will help us in the review and matching process. It is not guaranteed but we do our best to match you with the right mentor based on your responses on the application.
You only need to submit one letter of recommendation. The letter should come from someone who knows you, your abilities, your work ethic etc. Please do not ask your campus dean or one of your current course faculty.
Letters of recommendation must be submitted by the application due date of January 15.
