The Division of Nephrology offers a Home Dialysis Fellowship to train nephrologists in all aspects of home dialysis including hands-on clinical experience in initiation, management, and administrative aspects of home dialysis. After the fellowship, the fellow will be prepared to independently care for home dialysis patients. Our program is a one year non-ACGME accredited training program.
Clinical Experience
The nephrologist at Indiana University School of Medicine cares for over 100 home dialysis patients, providing needed clinical experience to the fellow. The fellowship program aims to provide both peritoneal dialysis and home hemodialysis experience in outpatient and inpatient settings. Clinical rotations will be divided into six months of outpatient and inpatient. Each of the rotations will be a month long.
Outpatient Rotation
During each month-long rotation, the fellow will attend two to three home dialysis clinics per week with attendings. They will perform pre-dialysis patient assessments along with nurses. The fellow will supervise new patient peritoneal dialysis and home hemodialysis training and troubleshoot with nursing staff and nephrologist in case of complications. They will also actively participate in monthly quality assurance/process improvement monthly meetings.
Inpatient Rotation
The six monthly rotations will be either at IU Health Methodist Hospital, IU Health North or IU Health West. The fellow will follow hospitalized home dialysis patients. They will be learning transition of outpatient home dialysis prescription to inpatient and urgent start peritoneal dialysis.
Teaching and Didactics
The home dialysis fellowship curriculum is based on ACGME requirements of nephrology fellowship, ASN Dialysis Virtual mentor. The home dialysis fellow will be involved in teaching medical students, first- and second-year nephrology fellows. The didacts will be provided by local home dialysis experts and in collaboration with other programs.
Clinical Research
The fellow will have the opportunity to participate in clinical trials and other investigator-initiated projects. They will be encouraged to develop their own research projects including quality improvement projects.
