Microscopy Core

The microscopy core provides access to state-of-art microscope equipment for Stark Neurosciences Research Institute-affiliated members. Please reach out to request equipment demos or purchasing based on scientific need.

What can the Core do for you?

  • Help design and optimize experimental imaging and quantification.
  • Provide consultation for data analysis.
  • Train users on confocal microscopy.
  • Provide incubation stage for live imaging.
  • Provide access to data analysis software.
  • Regular courses to improve your imaging and analysis.

Core Services

  • Zeiss LSM900 is a laser-scanning confocal on a Zeiss Axio Observer 7 Inverted Microscope. The instrument includes an Airyscan2 module, which allows for super-resolution beyond the diffraction limit of traditional confocal microscopes. (~120nm XY, ~350nm Z).
  • Four exciter lasers: 405, 488, 561, and 640.
  • Four objectives
    • Plan-Neofluar 5x/0.16 WD=18.5mm
    • Plan-Apochromat 10x/0.45 WD=2.0mm
    • Plan-Apochromat 20x/0.8 WD=0.55mm
    • Plan-Apochromat 63x/1.40 WD=0.19mm OIL IMMERSION
  • Three fluorescence detectors, two traditional PMTs and one Airyscan detector for simultaneous imaging of up to three colors
  • Resolution adjustable up to 6144x6144 per frame
  • Adjustable bitdepth: 8-16bit
  • Okolabs stagetop incubation with 35mm dish and plate adapters

  • Nikon A1R is a laser-scanning confocal on a Nikon Ti-E inverted confocal microscope. The instrument includes a resonant scan mirror on the x-axis, allowing for extremely fast acquisition speeds compared to traditional galvo scan mirrors.
  • Four exciter lasers: 405, 488, 561, and 640nm
  • Four objectives:
    • 10x Plan Apo λ
    • 20x Plan Apo λ DIC
    • 40x Plan Fluor DIC – OIL IMMERSION
    • 60x Apo λ – OIL IMMERSION
  • Four detectors for simultaneous imaging of up to four colors. A spectral detector is available for unmixing of similar fluors or spectroscopy.
  • The resonant scanner is limited to 512 pixels on the x-axis, and can acquire a 512x512 image at up to 30 frames per second. Full galvo scanning at 512x512 can achieve 1-10FPS. Full galvo scanning can acquire at resolutions up to 4096x4096.
  • Bitdepth: 12
  • No automated stage

  • Nikon Confocal Analysis Workstation with 3D deconvolution and General Analysis modules
    • Elements AR 4.51
  • Experimental Design or Data Analysis Consultation
