Bio

Andrea Merchak, PhD, joined the Indiana University School of Medicine in 2025. She is a neuroscientist studying the intersection of the brain, gut and immune system in neurological disorders and aging.

Dr. Merchak completed graduate studies under Dr. Alban Gaultier at the University of Virginia. Her thesis examined the role of the gut microenvironment on mood disorders and multiple sclerosis. She then received a fellowship to work under Dr. Malú Tansey at the University of Florida as a postdoctoral associate. During that time, she studied the interplay of genetics, diet and gut inflammation in mouse models of dementia and Parkinson’s disease.

She continues her work with a focus on immune regulation during aging, bile acid modification of the immune environment, and examining peripheral therapeutic targets for neurodegeneration.
