Director's Welcome

Welcome to the Psychiatry Residency in Evansville, in partnership with Deaconess Health System and Southwestern Behavioral Healthcare.

We are proud to be building a university-affiliated, community-based psychiatry residency grounded in the belief that outstanding psychiatrists are trained through broad clinical exposure, close mentorship and meaningful connection to the communities they serve. Our mission is to prepare physicians who graduate with the confidence, competence and compassion to care for patients across the full lifespan — from adolescence through older adulthood — while skillfully addressing the complexities of mental illness, substance use and co-occurring medical conditions.

Our four-year curriculum is designed to provide comprehensive, progressive clinical training in both biological and psychotherapeutic approaches — emphasizing the development of strong therapeutic relationships, thoughtful case formulation and flexible, patient-centered treatment planning across the lifespan. Residents gain strong experience in general psychiatry, addiction treatment, community mental health and integrated care across inpatient, outpatient, emergency, consult-liaison and specialty settings at Deaconess Health System and Southwestern Behavioral Healthcare. Training in psychotherapy is a central pillar of our program. Residents receive structured education and supervised clinical experience in multiple evidence-based psychotherapy modalities, with the goal of graduating as psychiatrists who are comfortable integrating psychotherapeutic treatment alongside pharmacologic and somatic interventions.

As a university-affiliated community program through the Indiana University School of Medicine, we combine academic rigor with real-world clinical experience. Residents benefit from evidence-based teaching, scholarly opportunities and faculty deeply committed to supervision and mentorship, while working in clinical settings that reflect the true needs of the populations psychiatrists serve. Our partnership with Southwestern Behavioral Healthcare provides rich exposure to public and community psychiatry, while our work within Deaconess Health System supports training in integrated and hospital-based care. We place a strong emphasis on addiction treatment, interdisciplinary collaboration and preparing graduates for independent practice — whether in community settings, academic roles or fellowship training.

Most importantly, we are committed to supporting the professional growth and well-being of our residents. We seek curious, compassionate physicians who value comprehensive, relationship-centered care and are eager to develop as clinicians, colleagues and leaders. We invite you to explore our program and consider joining us as we train the next generation of psychiatrists dedicated to excellence, equity and lifelong learning.
