Urologic Oncology Fellowship

The Urologic Oncology Fellowship Program at Indiana University School of Medicine is a two-year program comprised of one research year followed by one year of clinical fellowship. Consistent with the mission of the Society of Urologic Oncology, the program provides comprehensive training in clinical genitourinary oncology through advanced surgical training, multidisciplinary didactics and clinical/translational research endeavors.

The program is based at the Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center and Indiana University Health University Hospital. University Hospital has 395 beds and urologic strengths are oncology, minimally invasive surgery and urinary reconstruction. It is the only academic health center in the state of Indiana.

Applicants to this fellowship program must be eligible for an unrestricted medical license in Indiana and must have completed an accredited residency in the United States or Canada. This fellowship is part of the Society of Urologic Oncology.

First Year Curriculum

During the first year, fellows participate in clinical, translational and basic science research. Fellows have 90 percent of protected time for research. Research training covers protocol development and clinical trial design, collaboration and coordination of translational projects with researchers at Indiana University and Purdue University, and health services and outcomes-based study. Basic science research is focused on genetic and translational approaches to the treatment and management of urologic malignancies. Opportunities to rotate with medical oncology and radiation oncology colleagues are coordinated during the year, and fellows serve as a clinical staff at a county hospital, participating in autonomous resident supervision and teaching. Overall clinical responsibilities during the first year of this fellowship program comprises less than ten percent of the fellow’s time. The remaining time is protected for research and academic study. They also have the opportunity to earn a Master of Public Health or other graduate degrees.

Conferences

Fellows are encouraged to present abstracts at regional and national meetings and contribute to peer-reviewed publications. Fellows are also responsible for leading a weekly multidisciplinary cancer conference. Some of the other conferences fellows participate in include a monthly general urology research conference, monthly oncology journal club, monthly fusion/focal therapy conference, hereditary kidney cancer clinic, monthly morbidity and mortality, weekly IVP conference and weekly didactic lecture series.

Clinical Research

Fellows have access to databases in testis cancer, bladder cancer, prostate cancer, kidney cancer and laparoscopic and robotic surgery. They can also utilize the Health Outcomes database by Regenstrief Institute. Several clinical trials are underway in prostate, bladder, testis and kidney cancers.

Second-Year Curriculum

The second year of this fellowship is dedicated to clinical training in the operating room. Fellows participate in a wide array of open and minimally invasive surgery procedures performed under the supervision of experienced urologic oncology faculty physicians. The department’s teaching faculty have unparalleled clinical experience in complex oncologic and reconstructive surgery and are recognized globally for surgical expertise in testicular and advanced bladder cancer.

Fellows at IU School of Medicine receive a high-volume surgical experience with complex oncologic exposure. Average case experience for a urologic oncology fellow is shown in the table below. Most fellows graduate in the 90th percentile of readiness for these procedures.

Fellowship Support

In addition to teaching faculty at IU School of Medicine, fellows receive additional support from the IU School of Public Health. They also have the opportunity to take statistics courses and are given office space, educational materials (such as American Urological Association computer-based programs), and an educational allowance for travel, books and other materials.

Global Health

Urologic oncology fellows have the opportunity to travel to Kenya through IU School of Medicine's partnership with Moi University and AMPATH and provide care. Residents, fellows and faculty visit Kenya annually or biannually.
