In the Department of Radiation Oncology at Indiana University School of Medicine, our residents receive the support they need to maintain a healthy work/life balance and wellness.
Resident Wellness
It is our mission that residents are valued in their primary role as learners during their four-year residency in the department, which we believe aids in resident wellness. Residents are not expected to cross-cover services due to another residents’ absence, only work with one attending per day with at least one academic day per week, do not cover patients who are seen and treated at a satellite facility at which residents do not rotate, are not expected to be physically present on weekdays or weekends to allow patients to be treated, and have up to 12 months of non-clinical time to pursue research or another degree. Our didactics are structured on discussion to further the knowledge base of our residents, without an atmosphere of stress or fear. Once a year, after the yearly in-service examination, our residents are excused from clinical duties for a resident-only wellness retreat supported by the department.
