Message from the Residency Program Director

Welcome to the Indiana University School of Medicine Radiation Oncology Residency program website and thank you for your interest in our program. We offer a comprehensive residency training program in radiation oncology, thoroughly preparing our graduates for independent practice. While the main objective of our training program is to promote our residents' growth to become clinically excellent radiation oncologists, we offer much more than clinical training during the four years of residency at IU School of Medicine.

The residency program at the Department of Radiation Oncology is the only radiation oncology residency program in the state of Indiana. IU is home to the IU Melvin and Bren Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center, an NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center, offering vast resources and opportunities for research collaborations outside of our department. Permits for a new $1.6 billion academic health center in downtown Indianapolis were recently submitted.

The Department of Radiation Oncology is currently home to 14 clinical faculty, 12 physics faculty and three radiobiology faculty. In addition to dedicated radiobiology and radiation physics courses, PGY-2 residents participate in a short course in biostatistics, a two-day Oncotalk seminar (similar to Vitaltalk), and a 'protocol month' in March. Protocol month is a unique experience at IU in which residents lead the development and later opening of their own prospective clinical during residency. Residents oversee conceptualization, protocol writing, regulatory approval and compliance, patient enrollment, analysis and reporting of their trial with close mentorship from faculty.

Residents have access to diverse mentorship, and we are proud to tailor residency experiences to each resident's individual career goals. Residents typically work one-on-one with an attending focusing on one to two disease sites, do not cross cover each other in case of absences, and have at least one academic day per week on all rotations. Residents have up to 12 months of non-radiation oncology clinic time for dedicated research or to enroll in a degree program. Didactic time is protected, typically daily from 8-9 a.m., and there is daily prospective peer review from 12:30-1 p.m. Our residents see a great volume and breadth of brachytherapy and pediatric patients and easily meet all case requirements without away rotations. A Clinician Educator Residency Track and Global Health Residency Track are available. Residents have a generous yearly book fund, and ample vacation, conference, sick and personal time. The Indianapolis metropolitan area has a low cost of living with many of the benefits and attractions of a big city.

We are excited to welcome you for the virtual interview season. Currently, we have seven residents and are offering two advanced positions for the Match.
