Cytopathology Fellowship

Cytopahology Group photo

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine is currently accepting applications for a one-year fellowship in diagnostic cytopathology, accredited by ACGME. This fellowship provides comprehensive training encompassing all aspects of cytopathology, including routine gynecologic and non-gynecologic specimen sign-out, as well as fine needle aspiration biopsy procurement and analysis. Ample opportunities for teaching, research, and collaboration across departments are offered.

Situated within a state-of-the-art core pathology laboratory along the picturesque Indianapolis central canal and cultural trail, the Division of Cytopathology receives approximately 70,000 cases annually from the six affiliated hospitals with the IU School of Medicine—Indianapolis campus. This workload includes over 4,100 fine-needle aspiration cases annually, with a third collected by cytopathology staff and fellows.

Oversight of training is provided by 11 experienced cytopathologists, 10 of whom are also subspecialized surgical pathologists in areas including gynecologic pathology, soft tissue pathology, gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary pathology, head and neck pathology, and hematopathology.

Fellows collaborate closely with a team of experienced cytotechnologists and dedicated support staff. Participation in daily slide reviews, tumor boards, journal clubs, research projects, and national meeting presentations are integral components of the fellowship experience.
