Hematopathology Fellowship

The Hematopathology Fellowship at Indiana University School of Medicine is offered by the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Division of Hematopathology. We provide fellows with extensive clinical experience, access to advanced resources and exposure to various specimens across diverse practice settings. This one-year fellowship is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and two fellows are  accepted each year. Successful completion of the fellowship makes one eligible for hematopathology certification by the American Board of Pathology.

Additionally, clinical and research experience as a postdoctoral fellow may be available (non-ACGME). Please direct inquiries to the fellowship director and coordinator.

The Division of Hematopathology is uniquely situated in an independent core pathology laboratory on the picturesque  Indianapolis Central Canal and Cultural Trail. We receive over 25,000 specimens from all academic IU Health system-based hospitals and affiliated laboratories, Riley Hospital for Children, Eskenazi Health, Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center and other community-based private practices. Our fellows learn from a diverse patient population, including complex specimens from academic practice, specialty clinics such as myeloma and bone marrow transplant and various community settings. You will interact with multidisciplinary teams to guide patient management. We diagnose both adult and pediatric patients over a broad spectrum of benign and malignant disorders.

Training in the fellowship program includes:

• Diagnostics of bone marrow, peripheral blood, body fluids and lymph nodes
• Automated hematology and medical director oversight
• Ancillary testing: immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, flow cytometry (including minimal residual disease analysis), cytogenetics and molecular pathology (PCR-based and next-generation sequencing)
• Coagulation
• Capillary electrophoresis for RBC disorders: hemoglobinopathies and thalassemias

Didactics

In addition to daily clinical case evaluation, academic educational content includes a daily QA conference, regular morning trainee session/ lectures, fellow-focused didactics, monthly journal club/cytogenetics-molecular correlation, biweekly Path to Hemepath sessions and attendance at national meetings, including SH/EAHP.

Laboratory management

The fellowship also enhances medical director skills through involvement in daily operations and direct participation in laboratory inspections for CLIA accreditation.

Research

Hematopathology faculty are actively involved in clinically oriented research. Fellows receive two dedicated elective months for research and focused diagnostic exposure.

Applicants with a solid interest in hematopathology are encouraged to apply. Stipends are commensurate with the level of postgraduate training.

The Hematopathology Fellowship participates in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). We comply with guidelines set by the Society for Hematopathology.
