Rotations

Fellows in the Infectious Diseases Fellowship at Indiana University School of Medicine gain extensive clinical experience through exposure to a diverse patient population and a wide range of infectious disease cases. Over the course of the 24-month program, fellows complete a series of required clinical rotations at four different hospitals designed to build a strong foundation in infectious diseases. Learn more about the individual hospitals.

Required Clinical Rotations (16 months total)

  • Eskenazi Hospital: 3 months
  • Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center: 2 months
  • IU Health University Hospital general: 3 months
  • IU Health University Hospital abdominal transplant: 1 month
  • IU Health Methodist Hospital general: 1 month
  • IU Health Methodist Hospital thoracic transplant: 1 month
  • Clinical microbiology: 1 month
  • Infection prevention: 1 month

These rotations span four major hospitals and clinical sites, offering fellows a rich and varied training environment. Fellows also receive four weeks of vacation per year, totaling eight weeks over the duration of the fellowship.

Personalized Clinical Tracks (5 ½ months)

Beyond the core rotations, fellows have the opportunity to tailor their training through ten months of elective time focused on a specialized clinical track. Available tracks include:

  • Infection prevention
  • Antimicrobial stewardship
  • Global health
  • Medical education
  • Critical care
  • Private practice
  • HIV, hepatitis and STIs

Additional educational opportunities are available through the NIH-funded T32 research fellowship and the Kenya elective, offering global health experience and advanced research training. For more information, visit our fellowship page.

Sample Schedules

Given the highly individualized nature of our fellowship, each fellow’s schedule can vary significantly based on their chosen clinical track, interests and goals. To help prospective applicants better understand how the program is structured, we provide several sample schedules that illustrate different combinations of clinical rotations, conferences and other key components of the fellowship.

Each sample includes mock fellows to demonstrate how schedules may align and interact across the program, offering a clearer picture of the day-to-day and longitudinal experience within the fellowship.
