Genetic Shadowing Program

Shadowing can help you learn more about a profession and determine if it is right for you. The Department of Medical and Molecular Genetics offers several options for students age 18 or older who are interested in shadowing a genetic counselor or a clinical geneticist at IU School of Medicine.

  • Meet with a genetic counselor in person or by phone. An observation of a patient encounter is not included in this option. This may be the preferred option for students who are in the beginning stages of learning about a genetics profession.

  • Short term shadowing experience of a genetic counselor during a patient encounter. This option is for those who desire observation of a patient encounter to learn more about the profession. Short term shadowing experiences typically consist of a half day or full day of observation with the genetic counselor in a clinical setting.
