Educational Sessions

Our core topic sessions are presentations by faculty and guest lecturers who are experts in their field. These sessions repeat every 18 months, allowing for education on the material twice during residency. Our core didactic curriculum is continuously reappraised and adjusted based on emerging topics in family medicine, comprehensive review of training exam scores and resident feedback.

Along with learning from our faculty members, residents also learn how to critically appraise new and emerging research through journal club sessions. These sessions are resident led and include a faculty moderator.

All residents lead multiple case presentations during their residency career. Rather than focusing on the primary disease process, these sessions focus on the critical thinking required to obtain the diagnosis from the moment the patient presents to medical attention. Included within this is an evaluation of the social determinants that may represent challenges and barriers to medical care.

As part of residency training, we acknowledge that the challenges physicians face are not always diagnostic. During our challenging patient panel, residents present cases to peers and faculty to gain insight into common challenges, including non-adherence, patient education and complicated psychosocial factors.

The residency program works with a strong and engaged pharmacy team at IU Health Arnett. Monthly, pharmacy residents and attendings present on common medication classes, focusing on safety, tolerability, efficacy, price and simplicity.

Resident Only is an important time carved out of our didactic conference that allows residents to provide honest and informative feedback on a variety of residency topics and updates. These sessions are organized by the chief resident, and, as the name implies, is open to residents only.

Another resident-led session, board review is monthly session to help our senior residents prepare for the American Board of Family Medicine certification exam. Each year the PGY3 class chooses how to utilize this time and may include review of previous in-training exams and AAFP questions.
