Introduction to research methods and scientific methods and scientific investigation in the biomedical sciences.
Registration instructions
Prior to registering for MSCI M450 (to be done the previous semester):
-
The student must contact our program and speak to our student coordinator. They will let the assistant director of undergraduate education know of the student’s wish to pursue MSCI M450 and will inform the student of the next steps.
-
The student should provide their IU username and their 10-digit IU ID in the email.
-
-
The student must contact the research faculty mentor and ask the faculty mentor to email our student coordinator (Emrie Gilbert, emgilbe@iu.edu) and assistant undergraduate director (Valerie O’Loughlin, PhD, vdean@iu.edu) with the following information:
-
Explain whether the research in question relates to health or medical sciences
-
The faculty mentor states in the email that they agree with the research being done in their lab to count for MSCI M450 credit
-
List the amount of time the student will be spending weekly in the lab for the summer or semester (so we can determine how many MSCI M450 credit hours a student should register for)
-
The faculty mentor states that they will provide us with a summary of the student’s performance and a final grade for the research at the end of the semester (or summer session)
-
-
Upon receipt of the email, the assistant director of undergraduate education will evaluate the information given and, if the course is determined to satisfy MSCI M450 credit, will determine the number of MSCI M450 credit hours (recognizing that no more than 3 credit hours will be approved per semester), and will inform the student, faculty member and student recorder of this information.
-
The student coordinator will provide permission for the student to enroll in MSCI M450.
-
The student will then enroll in MSCI M450.
During the semester the student takes MSCI-M450:
-
The student fulfills the obligations of the lab duties with the STEM faculty member.
-
The last week of the semester, the faculty member should contact the student coordinator (Emrie Gilbert, emgilbe@iu.edu) and assistant undergraduate director (Valerie O’Loughlin, PhD, vdean@iu.edu) to let them know the grade the student has earned in MSCI M450.
-
The student coordinator will enter the student grade for MSCI M450.
