Inspiring the Next Generation of Health Care Professionals

Our department is committed to inspiring the next generation of health care professionals, with the help of Tina Harris, MD, abdominal division member. Department radiologists have engaged with students through shadowing programs and comprehensive outreach. For eight years, the Women in Radiology (WIR) group has mentored middle school girls at a statewide STEM conference, in collaboration with Girls Inc. The department and IU Health have also hosted high school students, with students pursuing careers as sonographers and other imaging fields, thanks to their experiences. These efforts are supported by dedicated radiology staff, fellows, residents and technologists.

Revolutionizing Prostate Cancer Care

Temel Tirkes, MD, has significantly improved prostate cancer care by leading the Prostate Working Group at IU School of Medicine. His work introduced MRI-guided fusion biopsies, increasing cancer detection by 40% and identifying high-grade cancers more accurately. This led to a dramatic increase in prostate MRIs at IU Health, from 45 to 1,300 per year. Additionally, Dr. Tirkes brought non-surgical ablative therapies to IU Health, which quickly became the nation's top center for these procedures, offering patients less invasive treatments with fewer complications. His efforts have positioned IU Health as a leader in advanced prostate cancer care.
