Why should I seek mental health services?

There are various reasons one might seek services from a mental health provider:
  • Anxiety
  • Obsessive-compulsive symptoms
  • Difficulties in connecting with others/lack of a sense of belonging/feeling alone
  • Depression
  • Overwhelmed/overburdened
  • Normative developmental concerns
  • Stressors/difficulties related to the demands of training
  • Challenges to self-esteem that occur over the course of medical training
  • Current events (including feelings of worry/sadness/frustration)
  • Challenges with relationships, activities or the ability to use typical coping skills
  • Family issues

Unsure which type of therapy best meets your needs?

  Targeted Therapy Urgent Visit Psychotherapy
Description  A single session designed to focus on one stressor or concern and provide a clear action plan for how to manage the issue and move forward by the end of the appointment. Designed to focus on an issue that requires immediate support. Available within 1-2 days.
Designed to increase awareness and use self-reflection to build a range of skills, including developing coping strategies for ongoing challenges or managing chronic mental health needs.

  • Thinking through a major decision
  • Needing ideas for building better school-life or work-life balance
  • Coping with disappointing news
  • Recurring thoughts of self-harm

  • Managing anxiety, depression, or other mental health diagnoses

How do I schedule?
Log-in to the portal, click “Schedule an appointment” and, when prompted, select “Targeted Therapy Session.” You can then select the best day/time for your visit.
Reach out to the front desk by either calling 317-278-2383 or going to the portal and selecting “Read or Send a Secure Message.” Click “New Message” and then “Appointment Request.” The front desk will get you seen as quickly as possible.
Log-in to the portal, click “Schedule an appointment” and, when prompted, select “General Need.” You can then select the best day/time for an intake phone call to get started.
What if I need additional help?
A follow-up plan will be created. After time to implement the plan and reflect on its efficacy, you may have the opportunity for additional sessions with the same therapist.
A follow-up therapy session will be scheduled, if appropriate. If additional urgent appointments are needed, they will be scheduled, as well.  
Follow-up visits are generally scheduled at the end of each appointment.

During the 2021-2022 academic year alone, the Department of Mental Health Services served 922 patients and 27% of all IU School of Medicine trainees. In fact, over the course of their medical training, 35% of MD students and 24% of residents and fellows sought services from the Department of Mental Health Services.
