Soyon Hong, PhD

Soyon HongThe Hong lab, led by Soyon Hong, PhD, studies neuro-glia-immune interactions in the central nervous system (CNS) and the enteric nervous system (ENS). In particular, the lab is interested in how CNS- and ENS-resident macrophages (microglia and muscularis macrophages, respectively) and glia (astrocytes and ENS-glia, respectively) coordinate neuronal homeostasis, and how this neuro-glia-immune crosstalk breaks down in neurodegeneration. The lab is also studying how neuroimmune signaling across brain borders confer region-specific vulnerability of neurons in the CNS to loss and dysfunction. Hong received her PhD in Neuroscience in 2012 from Harvard, after studying with Dennis Selkoe on amyloid-induced synaptic degeneration. Her post-doctoral work with Beth Stevens at Boston Children’s Hospital led to the identification of microglia as cellular mediators of synapse loss in Alzheimer’s disease models. Soyon started her independent lab in the UK Dementia Research Institute at University College London in October 2018.
